The long previews in the theatre really didn't give me a good idea of what this movie was going to be about. Honestly I thought it was going to be a "scary" suspenseful thriller. Like I said I didn't know what to think. Let me preface this by saying my wife really does not do well with "scary" movies. We saw 6th Sense in the theatre and I thought we were going to have to walk out. She was petrified. So we watched the first 20 or 30 minutes or so and she gave up. She got scared and went upstairs. Granted we watch movies in pitch black with the 5.1 surround CRANKED which enhance the theme/mood of any movie. Anyways to get back on track I LOVED THIS MOVIE. I couldn't believe the little twists and turns and the acting and just really freaky wacked out scenes. This movie was pretty damn original and Kucher pulled it off. I didn't think about Kelso (his character from That 70's Show) once. The girl was great as well and the other kids. The movie doesn't ... | | Read Entire Entry |

She said to me she did not know what to think about it yet she did not really like it. I started getting a bit leery about the film after her opinion of the film. Well what can I say, I am not a big fan of Ashton Kutcher but to me the Butterfly Effect from the trailer looked liked something so original and interesting that it really didn’t matter that Ashton was in it or not. Well I read a lot of reviews for the film; most of them were not good at all. I also read an article on imdb.com that the film was screened at Sundance and the viewers hated the film. If that wasn’t enough in the article it also stated that Ashton Kutcher himself was not going to promote the movie due to all the bad reviews. Boy when I read all the bad things about the film and I found out Jen wasn’t crazy about the film neither well I had Butterflies in my stomach (Thank you ladie... | | Read Entire Entry |

I was actually surprised and found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would. It is a very slick, disturbing, and sad psychological thriller that at times was hard to watch. Several scenes, including the dog burning and the explosion, had me gaping with shock because of their brutality. And this is from someone who loves horror movies. Perhaps if the violence wasn't as shocking as it was, my rating would be higher. It is still a very good film, but not for everyone. Ashton Kutcher gives a believable and intelligent performance and proves that he can actually act outside of the comedy range. Amy Smart was also great, and at times stole the show from Kutcher. I hope this role helps her gain some popularity, for she is a very talented young actress. I was very happy to see that Ethan Suplee, who was the main thing that was keeping me away from seeing this, had a small and unimportant role and wasn't too di... | | Read Entire Entry |

I hate child actors...but I at least give props when there are some good ones. Too bad there were no good ones here. Plus, they take up half the movie portraying grown-up characters that they look NOTHING like. Okay, so if I hated it so much then why didn't I give it a lower rating? I actually did enjoy trying to guess what would happen every time Kelso went back and changed something. (Although it reeks of Back To The Future) I think I should go back in time and fix it so that I never saw this. | | Static Link |

However, he has matured in this role and I liked the movie overall. The twist on the movie’s concept is original, and I can certainly relate to the desire to "fix" my past. Unfortunately, the movie had three major flaws (for me): One: The movie could have been 30-40 minutes shorter. (Doesn't anyone edit movies in Hollywood anymore)? Two: The kid that played Tommy should have been physically bigger. After all, everyone else was older and bigger than he was, but Tommy was able to push everyone around. Evan and Lenny should have pounded the little brat into the ground. Yes, Tommy was psycho, but he was also half the size of everyone else in the "gang." Even the older Tommy was kind of short (especially compared to Evan). Three: If Evan knew what was going to happen with the mailbox, why was he standing so close to it? That was kind of stupid. Other than those three points, I liked the movie. I say....8/10. | | Static Link |

He did an average job - he wasn't no DeNiro, but come on, let's give him a break. The story was also average, featuring one of the dumbest means of time travel ever, but still - it was worth the free admision Some scenes reminded me of Donnie Darko, and it felt as if the directors were trying to do this. Also, the little kid Tommy - was a badass, or what? In all seriousness, I thought that character was a little too sadistic, and if an 8 year old ever told me to "shut the fuck up" in a movie theatre, I surely wouldn't shut up. Fuck him! I found Amy Smart's performance a bit forced, when she tried to be emotional - maybe she should stick with comedies. SPOILERS AHEAD: I thought the film should have ended with him in the hospital - and the doctor telling him he had no journals and he was just a nut. Too bad it ... | | Read Entire Entry |

But it seems Ashton realizes that not-so-prestigious title tends to only last for a short time. Sooner then later the allotted fifteen minutes of fame graced upon the “It” guy run out. The public finds a new “It” to obsess over. What happens to the old “It” guy? Well that depends. Some “It” guys, like Tom Cruise, step up a level and become bona fide stars. Others, like Judd Nelson, fade away into oblivion. The ones who stick around seem to branch out, try new things instead of sticking simply to what’s gained them “It” status. With The Butterfly Effect, Kutcher proves his intent to be a Hollywood mainstay for years to come. The film is far different from Ashton’s past projects. Question is, does Kutcher really have the talent to stay a star or is fifteen minutes all he deserves? Ashton stars... | | Read Entire Entry |

I was surprised to see Ashton Kutcher take all his former goofy personality roles and trash them all with a movie that is just a creepy as it is sick & twisted. Although special effects did have a big role in the film, the clever design of it all, the witty dialogue, and the cheap "boo"s were the winning ticket. On top of many other things, the movie managed to really breakdown each and every lead role's personalities and show how a change in time can change them ... A big 'good job' also goes out to the child actors in this film for re-iterating the roles of the stars in a very big way. I also managed to jump a few times during the "haunting recurrence" sequences. Hope to see more of these kind of films. This is the first really good movie of the year! | | Static Link |

This, not Ashton Kutcher, is the fundamental flaw of "The Butterfly Effect." It has fun with the paradoxes involved with time travel and changing the past, but it has a little too much fun, cutting back and forth beyond the necessity of the story, ultimately wearing out the novelty of the concept. The story follows Evan Treborn (Logan Lerman before he grows into Ashton Kutcher) through a series of traumatic events in his youth that he never seems to remember, due to his brain blacking said events out, a condition he inherited from his father. After something involving explosives incapacitates his friend Lenny, Evan's mom, in accordance with thriller mom logic, decides they should move away. Solid performances, and Ashton did a pretty good job in a character very different form the one he usually plays. The quantum butterfly is a fascinating symbol, and the theories associated with it fascinating theories. It's unfortunate that not a single soul associated with this movie understands either of these. As is so often my mantra: the performances weren't the problem; the script was. I know not everyone feels the same way as I do about it but I really think it is a brilliant film. It could be my bias toward movies that have twists and mind molding plots, but this movie also kept you watching in that when you thought you knew what was going to happen, it threw you a nice curve ball that kinda smacks you in the face a bit. I plan on watching it again in the near future because you always find different things the second time you watch a movie. But as of now I would have to give it a Matt Lockhart Media two thumbs up (if I had two more I would put them up as well)! I went to see it last night with three other guys and we all agreed that it was an interesting and trippy movie. I did enjoy myself while watching it, but I wouldn't say I was amazed while watching it. The acting was average, and Melora Walters was awful in my opinion. Despite all the jerking back and forth between different times I must say I sort of enjoyed the ride. Still parts got a bit silly, and it did have its share of needless violence. This aside I was intrigued where the ride would go next, and the movie did have its share of laughs. This movie won't do it for everyone, and deserves more than what the critics are giving it. For right now I'll give this a 7/10. | | Static Link |

Ashton Kutcher showed some versatility as he pulled this off very well. The part played by Lenny was also powerful as well, the way his character was dealt with actually enabled the viewer to care about him. The best part is the movie doesn't give us the "happy ending", it gives us a realistic one, overall an excellent movie. | | Static Link |

We have movies like Se7en, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and Fargo which are all very dark and disturbing in their own way. BUT all have substance and something more than darkness JUST for the sake of being dark. This cannot be said about The Butterfly Effect, Ashton Kutcher's attempt at serious acting. He does suceed, but not in the right movie. The film is chalk full of extremly disturbing situations (ones that some people may not be able to handle), dark and morbid settings, a cruel display of human nature, and absolutly no substance to excuse this morbid pile of waste. Its dark and disturbing just for the sake of being dark and disturbing. NO real situations, and no real characters to stay attached to. I just couldnt take this movie seriously. Interesting plot, nice twists and turns, decent acting. I kinda thought all of the actors drifted into carictatures of themselves in some of the life altering twists, but nothing too distracting. The biggest surprise for me was how graphic and violent the film is. I'm all kinds of down with Tarantino and Scorsese films, and this film brings that kind of intensity. Not that kind of drama, but with the violence and themes in this motha, the director definitely doesn't pander to the MPAA ratings board. Overall, not a "life altering" film(sorry, had to do it...) BUT definitely worth taking a look at if you think the premise is interesting. Now I gotta go get some stank on my hangdown....OUT. | | Static Link |
