When are people going to realize that proper streaming quality and DVD is the same damned thing? The DVD is just a digital stream no different than what you get through your broadband. Just because there's no disc for you to get your finger prints on doesn't mean the quality or viewing experience is any different. If you watch movies on DVD, it's pretty much the century for you to get over this imaginary streaming video quality conundrum you cry over. If you have a problem with streaming video, go throw your HD player in a lake and wait to order that 35m print off ebay. What sucks about Netflix's streaming service is that their selection sucks and their player isn't that good - those are both easy fixes. | | Static Link |

I always said I wasn’t interested, that renting has never been my thing (it hasn’t) and I’d rather just go to the movies and/or buy the DVDs I want to see. But as there are more and more movies lately coming out that I end up missing in theaters, and as I’m realizing I’d rather buy DVDs of movies I plan on watching more than once and not just having a ridiculously large collection of stuff I will never watch again, I decided to give Netflix a try. So far I’m loving it. The turn around time for mailing discs out and getting new ones back is fantastic. And they really do have a brilliant selection of DVDs. I found a film while reading Film Comment the other day that seems like it might be not the easiest to find, and I went on Netflix and sure enough there is was. Very cool. As for this new device…meh. The kept sending me movies on my list but not in the order i had them listed. I realize sometimes movies have wait lists. But the movies i listed were movies that were no interest to ordinary people. Netflix almost always has it. Back when I lived in the small-town suburbia that is the town I grew up I used to go to my friend's dad's store, which literally was just a mom and pop video store. Now that I live in the big city I go to the video store across the street that's basically just a privately run video store by the guy at the counter. It's pretty cool, anything he doesn't have you can order in a catelogue he has and it will be in his inventory forever after that. I don't know how your local Blockbuster (assuming you go there) is but mine has almost as much games as it does movies nowadays and I can never seem to find what I'm looking for. Netflix almost always has it. I'll still rent locally if it's a popular film or buy DVD's that I know will get repeated plays. | | Static Link |
