I would have replied sooner only my connection is throwing a hissy fit at the moment. Thanks for the eloquence WK, i reckon you've got an understanding of both myself and Faf's point of view. Faf is right, i'm judging Iron Man as a film only. And i stand by that because this Iron Man is a film, not a comic. The direction they went with the first story lead me to believe that mythology and magic were not part of the world that film created.

Well, of course there are exceptions for some folks (because they are either unimaginative, handicapped, close minded, or are concerned by whats acceptable within society). In today's present reality, comics are publically regarded that they are for children and or teens. Furthermore, comics reputation not having faired well over the years hasn't helped matters either. In fact, it seems like some gruesome fairy tale now, but there actually was a time when comic books were literally burned in the streets! In the mid-50s the book "Seduction of the Innocent" by p...

Not easily, but who's dismissing anything easily? Besides, creating a movie based on a comic book character isn't the same as reproducing a book. Still, even then, Lord of the Rings made many changes to make the movie better. Had it been a verbatim translation, it would of sucked for everyone that isn't like me, and even I wouldn't have liked it as much. Additionally, LOTR is already a fantasy story grounded in magic and mythos. Redundo's point revolves around the fact that he doesn't think Iron Man is as good a movie if it's treated like fantasy grounded in magic and mythos. I think it's a valid point. I will say that I have a wait and see attitude towards Fin Fang Foom; everything in movies is always up in the air, and could flop like a rotten egg. I'm far more positive about Mandarin, though. That could work out very well with what they've established so far in Iron Man 1. Fafhrd

We're not talking about the comic books though, we're talking about a movie based, remember that word people, on a comic book. As I said, there are any number of ridiculous "fantasy" villians in the Spider-Man world which they could've included in the movies. However, there are characters which will work in a comic which stretch the bounds of credibility and suspension of disbelief too far when extrapolated to a movie. Especially when your established movie in the franchise makes little concession for that kind of fantasy outside of applicable science-fiction. Had Spider-Man 3 featured a dragon called Fin Fang Foom, I would be right there with all the people right now who hate it so as it is. The dismissive tone of the post was uncalled for however.

Oh I didn't pwn him, I was just disagreeing. I will say someone should educate themselves on comic books before they talk about comic books, as with any subject, I will agree with that. And I'm not saying that Redundo didn't.

As mentioned before, I think they should make Mandarin a man of mystism similar to Ra's Al Ghul; make him more of a mystic ninja or dark arts warrior. However, I think he should believe in science, espionage, and politics to achieve his ends as well. If he is to be this great villain of Iron Mans; he should have his hands in many things through out the world. Now, regarding Fin Fang Foom, I would have the writers take a page of coolness from Spielberg's Jurrasick Park. The first Jurassick was a phenomenal film. If the screen writers were to make Fin Fang Foom more of a scientific recreation of one of the most viscious dinosaurs from long ago, it might give it more credence (to the audience) than if he was from outerspace, another dimension, or if he was just sleeping or hibernating underground somewhere under the Earth's crust. Basically my point of conclusion is this. You can have your dragon ripping up New York or where ever. But you have to have it grounded in a way that is believable in order for it to w...

Spider-Man never resorted to stupid things like talking dragons. Why reduce yourself to something so silly when there are reams of enemies you could work or rework in to the style of movie you've created. Rework Mandarin as some nutso high-tech Yakuza or something. But a man with magic rings and a talking dragon... like Matt and redundo and 7th said; Only the fanboys will turn up. Because after what I've seen of Iron Man so far, if some silly fantasy shit turns up instead of just artistic licence sci-fi, I won't be there next time.

His name is Fin Fang Foom. Of course you could use his alias: He Whose Limbs Shatter Mountains and Whose Back Scrapes the Sun I think the Mandarin would be cool. The dragon while awesome would definately lose some fans of the first movie.

If they give him the purple underwear, then........no. I would still love to see Stark try fighting the dragon, get his ass kicked as Mandarin laughs, and then realize "ok, think bigger next time" and then we get him in a GIANT Iron Man suit. You know he'd do it! Fafhrd

And I thought the better first half of Iron Man set a tone that doesn't fit with a giant dragon turning up for the sequel. And just to synergise with the others... FIN FANG FOOM!!!
