Another one to look for in Star Wars is in The Phantom Menace. After they leave Tatooine, Obi-Wan's gained some weight when they arrive on Naboo. Later on in the film, he's "skinny" again.

Intentional discontinuties are funny as hell, like in most Naked Guns (moles will move around, etc) and in Young Frankenstein (moving hump). One thing that bothers me sometimes is objects moving backward when they should obviously be moving forward. For instance in Anaconda (I believe) there is a scene where they are on a boat passing by a waterfall and it is flowing upward. Common did they really think nobody would notice that? That Star Wars scene is hilarious... I too never knew that happened. That's what you get for being absurdly tall.

If you look at T2, when "Arnie" rides off the edge of the road (while trying to get John and he's on the motorcycle) you can tell it's a double. Arnie used a shitload of doubles. Benny Hill did a funny skit about doubles once in a take-off of The Avengers. If I could find it, I'll post it.

Star Wars has a shit ton of continuity mistakes. That's pretty funny that they added a sound effect to the newer version. Didn't know that.

In all the years and countless viewings of Star Wars I never noticed that.

If we're talking goofs in continuity, then the Departed has one (although, like mentioned above, Marty and Thelma don't care) early on. When Nicholson is saying "when I was your age, they would say you can become cops or criminals. What I'm saying to you now is this:" he has a cig in his mouth but when they cut to his closeup for "what's the difference" it's gone...plus I think Frank gives Billy money for his broken hand in the bar twice, at the end of one shot and the start of the next.

Jaws 4: The Revenge. Michael Caine swims to the boat and then in the next shot his shirt is dry. The guitar that Marty Mcfly was playing was a model that was not yet made in that year.

Agent 47's mystical tie in 'Hitman'. Pretty darn obvious. If you have seen 'Jurassic Park', when Alan Grant saves Lex from the Rex and they are hanging onto the dead electrical fence from plunging to the bottom of the deep ditch. From above the Explorer is being pushed by the Rex and Grant has to get him and Lex out of the car's inevitable path by moving back and forth to grab another piece of fence to safety. When they grab it just in time and the Explorer makes it's descent, it goes right THROUGH Grant's leg on the way down.

Among basic continuity errors, the most common ones are the aforementioned cigars and cigarettes burining at different speeds depending on the angle, dress straps or shirt collars that move back and forth for the same reason, as well as drinks that fill and empty. Those are by products of the way you have to film dialogue scenes but it would be nice if someone made an effort to synch them up, especially for major studio productions. As for anachronisms, noticing them can depend on your level of detailed knowledge of certain things. The thing that Le_Big_Mac mentions would have sailed past me. I know a little about the history of firearms, but not to that level. Having said that, I've seen several Civil War films, especially older ones, where people refer to the conflict, as it's going on, as "The War Between The States." There were millions of people taking part and I won't say definitively that no one ever used that term then, but the first on the record use of it was after the war, when the erstw...

It really doesn't take me out of the movie, but at the same time it does. There's a certain flawed genius quality it lends to movie. Well fuck, I apologize. I'm talking about anachronisms then.

One thing that really bothers me in movies are "gun flubs" when a character is using a particular style or brand of firearm and then it'll suddenly change in mid battle. It's not a HUGE issue I know, but I always notice and it bothers me. Doesn't anyone keep track of who has what? It's a prop like any other. You don't see people switch ties or switch wigs. Jeez. One example would be in American Psycho *feed me a stray cat* and another issue which I've noticed in movies is were a character's gun will fire once and then the chamber will "lock open" meaning that it's empty but after a brief cut the gun will continue firing as if the clip were fully loaded. In that newish Bruce Willis movie "16 blocks" there's a scene where Bruce fires his Glock handgun and it kind of jams into a "half chambered" position (rendering it non-fireable mind you) and the camera focuses on it for a REALLY long time with a circling shot. I would think that it would jack up the visual of the scene...

One recent example that I can recall that really totally took me out of the movie for a moment is this: In Glengarry Glen Ross, there is a scene when Shelley is describing how he closed a huge deal the night before to Ricky Roma. The shot is a low-angle middle shot held on Shelley, who is sitting down. So when he gets up for a moment, a move probably not anticipated by the director, the camera quickly tilts up to keep Shelley in the frame and when it tilts up the boom mike is like RIGHT THERE IN THE FRAME. And I'm not talking about a little bit of the mic that's peeking in from the top, like what happens when the film stock is a little out of alignment - I mean the whole boom: mic, stick, everything, is just right there smack-middle of the frame. Also, in the final shot of the film, an El-train is shown chugging past the screen; the camera starts facing right, and then pans left and as it pans along the train the shadow of the camera and crew is clearly and vividly visible on the side of the train. So yeah, ...

Wow, I think Mr. MovieMaster has found instant competition for worst troll of the year. Anyway, I think the original poster's examples are really more anachronisms, but in terms of continuity errors, there's a scene in The Untouchables, when Ness is trying to persuade Malone to join with him, where Sean Connery's top button switches between being buttoned and unbuttoned. That's all I can think of.

..... anyway. I usually don't mind continuity errors the first time i see a movie but after catching an obvious one and checking out multiple viewings it sometimes takes me out. There are only two that i can think of in recent films that i noticed the first time and that totally took me out of the film. SPOILERS LotR: Fellowship of the RIng- Sean Beans arm on Viggo's shoulder and then to his side back and firth during his final words before he dies. Bad place to take me out of of the intensity of a scene! Gangs of New York- Shoonmaker and Scorsese are known for not giving a fuck about continuity but the opening battle has a glaring mistake when D-Day Lewis stabs a random dude in the arm quickly and then throws the guy into Liam Neeson. Well the dude he stabbed in the arm WAS Liam Neeson! That really took me out of the scene, only for a second though.

Face/Off. Near the end where *SPOILERS* Nic Cage and John Travolta are fighting on the boat. They crash and both go flying into the air. Not only is there a slow motion shot of the doubles flying through the air, but their faces are in FULL VIEW for a good 5-7 seconds. Just...wow.

While I was watching Walk Hard, in the scene when Dewey Cox is going through his "Bob Dylan stage" and he's performing a concert outside in the 1960's, I noticed current cars passing in the background... It didn't really ruin the movie for me but it distracted me for a little bit. I've seen these kinds of errors before... planes in the sky before they were invented, different clothes, obvious stunt doubles; stuff like that. So I want to know what movies or scenes have you been distracted or removed from the film because of errors. EDIT: This thread is really about anachronisms... if that's more understanding!
