I mean, of course, Christopher Marlowe:) But my best bet for a good movie would be Kwame Nkrumah because he was the first true African leader, and because his fate ended in coup, exile and paranoia. What followed was 10 years of chaos in Ghana. That was the end of the pan African dream, and also I think the end of an Africa that would rise from the ashes of colonialism. In stead, there was CIA plots, power struggles etc etc. (and eventually dictatorship) And Nkrumah lived in exile claiming that there were people out to get him, very tragic. His tragedy was bigger than himself: it was the tragedy of post colonial Africa. Anyway, this is just my opinion. I will stop now and not write more emails. Mike | | Static Link |

Now don't get me wrong, the movie is very, very good in nearly all aspects. Don Cheadle definitely is the highlight of the film with a stunning performance that really surprised me. My biggest problem with it was that the movie really failed to emphasize on how very tragic the tutsi/hutu problems in Rwanda, and I blame the director. I had been led to believe that this movie was going to be emotionally draining and just very, very sad. I was both happy and disspointed when the movie turned out to be all but that. I felt I was watching "Hotel Rwanda: The Happy Cut". Modst of the movie has a very calm, leisurable atmosphere while the real tragedy is developing behind the hotel walls. It does often induce great performances, as in this case, but it also feeds the need for gratuitous voyeurism in the audience, watching (enjoying?) the tragic flaws in the powerful and influential play themselves out. And here we get two for the price of one with Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday. I expect that it was an expression of Plainview's character as well as a political statement that he is made to say that he wants everyone else to fail. I don't think you need to look any further than to say that his fatal flaw is his self-hatred that he projects it on everyone else. Beyond that, it's all performance, and wondering if his latest erratic action was pertinent or just something to keep the plot moving. Casting Hans Howes to play Mr. Bandy was great. That face! And the scene between Plainview and him was a high point. I suppose it doesn't... | | Read Entire Entry |

There's so many things, or at least feelings that this movie is going to affect. Every time i think about it I want to be happy that its over, or that Heath got the greatest character ever out of his system before he passed, but at the same time I feel dread that it will be hard to enjoy due to the overshadowing death. | Posted by: bigred760 at January 25, 2008, 11:36 am | | Topic: Atonement Forum: JoBlo | | I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. It seemed the movie was split in two, the first half dealing with the story of forbidden love and misunderstandings, while the second deals with tragedy and trying to make up for bad deeds - hence the title of the movie. I think there is a lot of underlying symbolism and meaning that I appreciated more than the movie itself. The very end of the movie locked it in for me, where the author explains what her book is about, and I thought that was a very nice touch to everything I had just seen onscreen. I watched this movie because of its Oscar nomination; I try to catch as many of the nominees I can every year (I usually end up watching four, this being the fourth I've seen of this year's nominees). I'm glad I did, since - like I said - I liked it more than I expected to. 8/10 | | Static Link |

They do, it's just a real shame that it had to end in tragedy. It isn't often I am moved watching a movie like I was in Mystic River. Clint Eastwood has outdone himself here, I think in a normal year he would've had a great shot at another directing Oscar. He gets topnotch performances out of the entire cast. Especially Sean Penn, who continues to prove he might be the best actor of his generation. Penn has always been great in his movies, but his films have often fallen short. Here he gives an overpowering performance as a grieving father. He has multiple scenes where he will just knock you over with his power and range. Tim Robbins gives the performance of his career as Dave. They both richly deserved their Oscars. To me this film is less about a murder mystery than it is about how one unforgettable tragedy effects these three men forever. The second tragedy just brings these buried emotions to the surface. The thread is similar to my sophomore term paper on whether art imitates life or vice versa. So two thoughts: A) I honestly don't think the tragedy on 09-11-2001 in NY/DC/PA had as much a lasting effect as some claim. Affected families will most unfortunately never have their loved ones back, and to a much lesser extent, all the money and resources expended could've been saved. However, even living a stone's throw from NYC, people seemed to begrudgingly move on. While there are obviously odes to the both the heroism and tragedy involved with 9/11 ('W.T.C.', 'United 93', etc.), and it is one of the most infamous days in both world and especially US history, its lasting impact has affected the arts little. B) And my second point: Yeah, all issues will be expressed and/or opined upon...film is, after all art, which, by definition, is an expression (in some form) of something. Vague? General? Broad? Yes. Patricia Highsmith wrote Ripley as someone who was able to slip into any role because he was totally empty inside, he had no identity of his own. Matt Damon in the movie is the only character (besides Peter, a sentimental addition) who does have an identity and for whom relationships mean anything -- he kills because he cares. The book is a cold-hearted comedy, the movie a romantic tragedy. They're both about hollow people going through the motions of life, but in the book it's Ripley who's hollow, and in the movie it's everybody else. | | Static Link |
