Thanks to the original poster in this thread for a thorough and fair review of this good movie. Anyone who contrasts it with the petty little tantrum of a 'review' by John Harkness can see what a proper review really is, and what a biased and self-absorbed pseudo-critic he is. -cr

I think your review is uninteresting. It's completely impersonal and you seem to be regurgitating the facts everybody knows already. Why are you so amazed at the technical merits of CK, even though many contemporary films are vastly superior to it in this regard? These merits and the fact that Welles was very young when he directed the movie seem to be the only reasons why you like it, as you don't say anything about the story or characters, what kind of thoughts and feelings they generated in you, etc. The fact that CK has been very influential in the past doesn't make it any better a movie, unlike you think. When I read a movie review I expect some personal insight that is lacking in your review. Sorry if this insults you, that is not my intention. I'm attacking your half-assed review, not you.

8/10 I really liked this movie. It was a lot more serious then I thought it was going to be. Bruce Willis was great in this, he is in most movies he does. There's also a lot of powerful scenes. Don't walk in expecting a flat out action film like Die Hard. It's just not that kind of movie. I had my doubts about the movie, from reading joblo's 5/10 review, but then I saw his 7/10 review for Dude, Where's My Car, so everything turned out nice.

I know you're still a tad bit new here movieDUDE, but your review isn't necessarily a "review". Awhile back, Jo posted up a sort of "criteria" or a broad requirement for how the reviews should be posted. Read this:
http://www.joblo.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/001302.html Also, fellow schmoe Mike posted a review for the same movie here. If you want to, you can reply there.
http://www.joblo.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/001332.html One more thing, before you post a review of a movie, use the search button to see if there are any previous threads started about the movie you are about to review. You can find the "search" button under the POST TOPIC and POST REPLY icons, near the top of the page. Much appreciated.

Here's the thing about the people who comment on RT... They hate anything that doesn't agree with the critical consensus. It doesn't matter what you actually say about a movie, it doesn't matter if it's good or not, doesn't matter if your review is positive, all they care about is that your review falls in line with what everyone else is saying. The weird irony of all those regular RT users is that they only READ reviews which don't agree with the Tomameter. So while they bitch a lot, they actually support people who disagree with their preconcieved notions of what a review should be, and shun anyone who says what they want them to. I'm sure they have no idea they are doing this, but it's a wonderful irony. If I'd written a negative review of In the Name of the King, none of them would have ever read it.

Speaking of Kael, a major magazine gave a very negative review of BONNIE and CLYDE. After Kael's very positive review, the same reviewer watched the movie again, and reversed his critical decision. Can't recall the mag or reviewer, but he was still reviewing films in Washington, several years back. p.s. Kael said the New Republic refused to print her review of the film.

It kept me entertained the whole way through. Pacino did fantastic, and so did the rest of the cast. The rise and fall story is perfect, IMO. Short review, yes, but fair. 10/10 easy

Topic: finding New York Times movie reviews Forum: groupsrv
One of the biggest internet joys for me has been the Movie Review Query Engine http://www.mrqe.com/ where I can find a large number of reviews of almost every movie. Gone are the days when I would cut out and store New Yorker movie reviews until I had finally seen the films. And the MRQE got even better when the New York Times posted its entire history of reviews, so I could read the actual review of any old movie I happened to watch. One does have to register to get access to these New York Times pages, but that is a minor issue. I have recently discovered, however, that the MRQE no longer takes me to the New York Times reviews but only to their current movie page. I did find a way to get to the reviews, however. Just go to the regular New York Times website http://www.nytimes.com/ and type, into their search box, "movie review" and then the name of the movie you're looking for.

Review: {9.5/10} {JUst writing another short review} Since The return of the KIng came out and i wrote a review for The fellowship of the RIng in "What do you think" post. i decided to write a review for The Two Towers. The second part of The Lord of the Rings was indeed a very good movie. The cast was great, the battle scenes amazing, and everything else was awesome. My favorite parts in this movie was anything that has to with Gollum, Sam, or Frodo, and the battle at HElms Deep. MOst people werent amused by the jokes that Gimli made, but i thought they were humorous. However, there was a flaw in this very good movie. One thing was that they really strecthed out plots and made me a little bored, but not that boring to lower the score of this great movie. My cousin {LOTR fanatic} told me that the extended edition as better than the original cut, so i should check that out too. Overall, a excellent 2 part to the lotr trilogy, cant wait to see Return of the King tomorrow.

Well I don't think it's funny, but if you're taking it as a legitmate review it's got to be the worst review I've ever read. I doubt it, but...possible SPOILERS My complaints: I'm not sure what they're talking about with "my daughter screaming for no reason". She had a reason...crop circles. That might not scare us, but that's certainly enough to scare most little girls I know, anyway, especially if she had dreams about it before it happened. The aliens clearly had a reason for walking around the neighbors house at night, unless the reviewer took a bathroom break during the part with the army guy and his recon theory. He's got kind of a point with the door thing, but that doesn't bother me too much. The main reason the review is so bad is that he missed so much. The movie is about an ex-reverend finding his faith again and a family trying to recover from a recent loss, and the aliens are almost secondary. The aliens are really just another thing the family has to deal with. But there is no trace of...
