| Posted by: TeeRay at May 22, 2008, 1:45 am | | Topic: What's with all the PG ratings? Forum: JoBlo | | It's all about the cash. PG-13 films usually make more money than films rated R. I have nothing against the ratings. IMO, I don't think kids should see R-rated films until they mature enough to handle it (usually around 10 and up). The trick is trying to work with the rating and not against it. Just because a movie is PG-13 and not R doesn't mean it has to be a terrible movie. Live Free or Die Hard is a good example. It's a great movie, and the PG-13 rating doesn't damage it. An example of a movie that really could use the R-rating is Accepted. So much potential wasted by trying to keep it tame. It was OK, but if had the R-rating it could have been so much more. Just some thoughts. | | Static Link |

If you want your film to be X-rated, you will have to assign the rating yourself. I don't think this is correct. I've seen several and have a 35mm snipe as well as literature published by the MPAA in the early '70s that clearly state that X is a rating for "17 or older permitted ONLY". Perhaps it was a self-designated rating that they recognized as "unpassed", but I doubt it. J. Theakston | | Static Link |

I don't believe that a PG-13 automatically makes a horror movie bad, just as R doesn't automatically make it good. There are good PG-13 horror and there's bad R horror. However, when it comes to the AVP series, the rating matters. Can you imagine an Alien or Predator film being PG-13? I sure as hell can't. It was incredibly stupid for AVP to be PG-13. What redeeming qualities does AVP have, in spite of the PG-13 rating? Not many, if any at all, and Anderson is not a good director, and his writing is even worse. If the rating of an AVP movie does not matter to you, I don't consider you much of a fan of the Alien or Predator movies. In this instance the rating should matter to you. That's why I made the younger viewer comment. If you'd grown up on the series and if they meant a lot to you, you'd feel differently. | | Static Link |

I think I'd give it a 6/10 - it was a fun popcorn movie, but I don't think it was anything more. As for the 6/10 rating on INTO THE BLUE, I think it is unfair to judge the rating alone. People simply compare ratings and that's not the way to do it. You have to compare the reviews themselves. Joblo appreciated INTO THE BLUE for what it was, but didn't say it was amazing or anything - just good ol' eye candy. Before he watched SERENITY, he heard nothing but INSANE PRAISE AND HYPE, thus making his experience watching the movie much different. He also explains in detail why he did or didn't like both movies, and does so in a way that you can obviously say, "Oh, well I guess that's where we disagree." You just have to look at it differently, and understand the reasoning behing the rating, and most of all, the review. | | Static Link |
