In my mind there is no doubt - I totally think the Coen Bros movie No Country for Old Men is most definitely a horror movie. Indeed, the book by Cormac McArthy was a horror novel... But the Coen brothers and Miramax have not advertised the movie as such... I believe they have indexed this film as 'Action / Thriller'. But its so much a HORROR MOVIE... A smart horror movie. Think about it. The movie has a villain, who is indeed very scary, and a mystery and plenty of creepy suspenseful moments.... Ah yes... but when was the last time a horror movie won Best Picture at the Academy Awards?

Would I call [REC] a new horror classic? No. Would I consider it to be a really quick, intense and fun horror movie that is better than most horror films coming out today? Yes. I'd recommend getting it though, the US DVD doesn't come out until Quarantine comes out on DVD also and it actually is a pretty good horror film. Just don't believe the hype from people claiming BEST MOVIE EVER or SCARIEST THING I'VE SEEN.

I'm not a fan of watered down horror for the sake of watered down horror either, but to say that there is no such thing as PG-13 horror movie would be a lie. Poltergiest, 1408, The Sixth Sense, Gremlins, Jaws, hell even Stephen King's It has a TV-14 rating here in the U.S. I believe, and all are PG-13 (or lower) horror films. Whether or not you like them, that's up to you. But to deny the fact that they are horror would be wrong.

Have you even seen this movie? I would not classify this as a horror movie (not at all) unless you some strange definition on what a horror movie is, to me horror is Hostel, Jeepers Creepers, Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Piranha, etc... and what does a "smart horror" mean. If you are familiar with the Coen brothers oevre you wouldn't dare calling this a horror movie. If it needs to be classiefied it would be better to call it a crime/drama. Btw the Coen brothers aren't strangers to the oscars, they've won before.

It's either a remake of Asian horror (The Eye, Shutter, One Missed Call) or a remake of '70s or '80s American horror (Prom Night) or straight-up torture porn. Either way, 90% of it is garbage. The best horror these days is mostly foreign, whether Asian or European. So yes, it is refreshing to see something that isn't a remake of some kind. However, I think that clouds assessments of the movie, at least a little bit. That or a love of the book elevates what one thinks of the movie. The reason I think PTA shouldn't do a horror movie is because of what its become. I'll be the first to admit that horror was a legitamite genre and has had some classics like some of the ones listed. Many of which were made 30 years ago and stand the test of time but I can't name on one hand how many memorable horror movies have done that for me from the last 20 or so years. My job at Blockbuster means I see what's coming out each week and not a week goes by without some crappy straight to video schlock infecting shelf space. With so many new directors making horror movies, its given me the feeling of horror movies being less like entertainment and nothing more than mass produced fodder. While other genres like drama, comedy, etc. likely have just as much a bad to good ratio, i'm not bombarded with them, and I've seen a lot more variety in the types of movies of its genre. The horror movies I get to seeing usual has the same formula, the same shitty design for a villain or monster, the same tits and ass, and...

Well, you know, horror divides into various genres. Theres lots of bad horror. Lots of cheesy stuff, that some would consider great and others not. But it looks like your looking for the best of the best, like the top fifty films that you MUST watch if you want to watch the best in horror....I can start you off with one that will most likely be mentioned as #1 on almost every horror fans list. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1979). This movie almost always precedes or is followed up by The Exorcist.

Sure there has always been and always will be PG-13 horror, and R horror will never entirely disappear. But I think there is a lot of pressure on Halloween and Saw IV to do well (I don't think Captivity is going to be a hit, no matter how much After Dark hypes it). It's been a bad year for R horror and a great one for PG-13, and Hollywood only cares about what you've done for it lately. The longer R horror does poorly, the less we'll see theatrically. More and more will probably go the DTV route.

Nail on the head for Diapason. Cabin Fever was a barely passable first effort, but it did show a love for the genre and some potential. Hostel is a big step forward, and I dug it. Look, do you think a horror god like Miike is going to do a cameo for a lightweight? Not happening. What horror fan can't appreciate a mutilated torture victim hiding on a cart full of bloody body parts? Like Diapason, I too have been a horror fan since I was a youngster in the 70's. Horror is a different animal. You have to draw the distinction between crossover horror that attempts to be successful in a traditional, mainstream movie sense (Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, Omen, Jaws) and good old fashioned horror. On that level, Hostel works. Put another way, Hostel is not the kind of movie you would bring home to your mother. But you got to love it!

Heres the thing though, horror is as shitty as it is right now because like you mentioned scarface98.9, theres too many crappy directors making horror films. Its come to the point where its just a watered down product. But the real root of the problem is mediocre directors with out any true vision out there. Non of these guys are focused on doing something different or truly frightening, they are most likely first time directors for hire, doing what they are being asked to do and getting payed for it as opposed to doing something you really love, doing something different, doing something that will really grab people, instead of doing the 100,000th Saw rip off. What horror needs are good directors who will actually put an effort into doing something thats worthwhile. Something that will truly knock our socks off. Thats what was so cool about the 70s, there were good directors making horror films. Like truly good directors. ANd hey, if Stanley Kubrick could do his horror movie, why cant any other great direct...

It was a effective horror movie that did its job, but not really anything thatll live on in my memory or anything. I thought Cloverfield, 28 Weeks Later(!!!), The Host, The Mist, 1408, The Descent, THE ORPHANAGE(..did no one see this?) were all better horror movies ive seen in the last year or so.

REC, without a doubt. Nearly everybody(especially horror fans) swears it's the best horror film in recent years. To me, it was typical headache-inducing bullshit like most current horror movies. With that considered, I'd go even further to say that the title is short for RECTUM, since the movie seriously eats ass, big time.

I mean, really…IT’S A HORROR FLICK!!! What were you expecting…AMADEUS - SCHINDLER'S LIST? Yeah, it didn’t have the acting brilliance or the top notch directing as in JAWS or THE EXORCIST, but hey, it was a decent horror flick as far as I’m concerned, and I enjoyed it. I wouldn’t put it in the top 10 or anything, but it wasn’t horrible. As far as the stoner T&A stuff, again IT’S A HORROR FLICK. Other than that rare collection of classics, 99.9% of ALL horror movies are filled with mindless sex and drugs, or have you forgotten. That’s why we like horror movies…it’s garbage….but it’s so much fun. As far as Cabin Fever, I don’t know what kind of heavy drugs some people are on, but are you kidding me? Freddy vs. Jason is winning? NO WAY! You know, the more I think about it, the more I feel cheated. I gave it a 6/10 right away after seeing it just because it was a fun horror film, nothing else. But the acting was even worse than atrocious, and there weren't one single hint of any eerieness to it, it wasn't treated as a horror film at all. Freddy and Jason were also wasted, not to mention they weren't scary anymore. Back in the ANOES and FRIDAY THE 13TH movies at least they were convincing villains and there were hints that those films were horror films, bad horror films maybe, but horror films nontheless. But this one wasn't even a 'horror' film, so I'm lowering my grade.........5/10 feels right, maybe 4/10. Btw, MAY deserves to win. That and Identity are by far the best horror films of the year IMO.
