What kind of an idiot schedlues the Sundance festival in the dead of winter? NPR just had a report saying that it was 3 below zero out there, which is probably about normal, for January in the Rocky Mountains. It seems to me that April, July or September would make a lot more sense, and it you want to have a film festival in winter, Texas or Arizona might be a better place to host it.

Italian film festival to honor Polanski By Eric J. Lyman 1 hour, 15 minutes ago http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080219/film_nm/polanski_dc ROME (Hollywood Reporter) - Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski, a fugitive from American justice, will be honored at the Turin Film Festival in November. Polanski, 74, won a best director Oscar for 2002's "The Pianist" and received nominations for "Tess" in 1979, "Chinatown" in 1973 and "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968. He fled the United States in 1978 rather than risk serving extended prison time after being convicted of having unlawful sex with a minor. A documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," suggests he was the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice. Monday's announcement, which precedes the start of the November 21-29 festival by a full nine months, comes on the heels of Polanski's cameo appearance in "Caos Calmo" (Quiet Chaos), which Turin festival artistic director Nanni Moretti co-wrote and starred i...

http://www.britishsilentcinema.com/ The British Silent Cinema Festival 2008, now in its 11th year, is a celebration of British cinema before 1930 and is organized in collaboration with the British Film Institute. The Festival aims to showcase the vast collection of films, fiction and non fiction, produced in Britain before the advent of sound, principally from the collection at the BFI National Archive, the UK's national repository of film and television. Many of the films are 'rediscoveries' and will not have been seen in public for several decades. This year the theme is Rats, Ruffians and Radicals: The Globalisation of crime and British Silent Film. Hi, is anyone who frequents these boards attending this year's event? If so & you'd like to meet up, post here or email me. I'll be attending all 4 days - it's on my doorstep - & although I've turned on quite a lot of friends & family to the joys of silents, I don't know of any other fans hereabouts that are ardent/dedicated/ demented* enough to do ...

Children's film festival in Louth again Published Date: 17 May 2008 By James Madge Saturday - FOLLOWING the success of Louth's first ever children's film festival in 2007, Louth Film Club will repeat the event this year. With films ranging from the most famous silent comedy to one of the most beautiful animated films ever made, the festival should appeal not just to children, but adults too. The aim of the festival is to give young people in and around Louth the chance to see some great films outside the usual Hollywood fare, in the best environment. As well as morning and afternoon screenings for school parties, there will also be public shows at the Playhouse cinema's regular evening time of 7.30pm. On Monday, June 16, Azur and Asmar - the Prince's Quest, a dazzling new film by animator Michel Ocelot, will be shown; on Tuesday, June 17, two of Buster Keaton's best films - The General and The Scarecrow - will be screened; and on Wednesday, June 18, A Little Princess, by director Alfonso Cuaron, completes the...

Hey guys! I know you all know about the Cannes Film Festival but the Toronto International Film Festival is slowly and steadily making it's way up the popularity ladder as well. Toronto is a rich, young, and historic city with tons of stuff to do. Whether it has to do with music, film, art, shows, and anything else in the likes of those departments. It is the perfect city to cultivate different ethnicities and backgrounds to bring together a wider audience range for films that are not mainstream friendly or understood. Many high-profile and well-known celebrities, filmmakers, producers, music artists, fashion stylists, designers have graced Toronto with their presence but the lasting impression that Torontonians and the city give to these tourist are always the same: as friendly and captivating as the place and people in it. So what do you guys think of TIFF or Toronto in general?

Topic: Silent film festival in Bonn, Germany, in August Forum: groupsrv
This year the Bonn silent film festival will take place for the 24th time. From 14th to 24th August silent films - mostly two per night - will be shown open-air in the inner courtyard of Bonn University. The films are always accompanied by Germany's and Europe's top silent film musicians, such as Aljoscha Zimmermann, Günther Buchwald and Joachim Bärenz. The festival is well-established and - as it is free as well! - draws quite a steady crowd even in bad weather! You can tell the regulars by the amount of bivouac equipment they carry. The programme is always a good mixture of German, European and American films. Silent drama normally takes precedence over comedy. New restorations are showcased and the best quality prints are obtained from around the world. This is a big affair under the patronage of, among others, the Munich Film Museum. On the two Sundays there is normally a programme of film lectures in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn, where rare gems are shown to the discerning (and paying) few. Last ...

Cabin Fever, is about 5 college students who rent a cabin in the woods for a week. While they are there in the woods they come across a man whose skin looks all infected and to protect themselves from him they light him on fire. Soon they start to realize they he was carrying a flesh eating virus and soon the friends start to get it and nobody knows how to handle it and they lock up the ones who do have it so the ones who don't will be protected. This soon changes how they act with each other and how they are going to handle the situation of the others and themselves. Cabin Fever, originally played at The Toronto International Film Festival, in September of 2002. It ended up being the highest selling movie at the festival that year and all of the nine studios engaged in a bidding war to see who would get the film. The winner was Lions Gate Films, and it is the most money the studio ever spent acquiring a film. Winner of The Best Make Up Award at The Catalonian International Film Festival. http://www.polskieradio.pl/thenews/culture/?id=80029 Silent films in Warsaw Created: 11.04.2008 11:16 A three-day Festival of Silent Film has opened in Warsaw. The programme includes a wide range of features and documentaries by directors from Poland, Sweden, Italy and several other countries. Among the highlights of the event is The Cult of the Body, a feature by the prominent Polish director Michal Waszynski dating from 1930. The film is the screen version of Mieczyslaw Srokowski's novel of the same time, which was a literary sensation in the early 20th century because of its erotic content. The book and the film tell the story of a sculptor's love affair with his model. Believed to have been lost, Waszynski's film was discovered several years ago in the Royal Film Archive in Brussels. The screenings of silent film are accompanied by live music performed by groups combining jazz with electronics. The Festival is organized by the Polish Film Archives (Filmoteka Polska). This year it is held for the 6th time....
