Michael Mann's HEAT is a muscular piece of work, impressive as smart mainstream entertainment, as lushly designed art film and as one of the most convincing depictions of the bond between hunter and prey that I can recall. The obsessed cop who can't save his marriage. The obsessed criminal who wants to go straight. The women who try to love them. These are fairly hackneyed themes but Mann keeps the focus elsewhere: on the nuts-and-bolts process of preparing and executing a job, on the edgy relationships between the robbers and the cops and the fences. One of HEAT's greatest strengths is in the details (De Niro's other heist film, THE SCORE, boasts the same strength). Nothing enters Mann's frame that is not designed to be there. At the center of the film is a breathtaking scene where Pacino and De Niro eye each other across a diner booth. Cop and thief. They are enemies but they also need each other. It is important that they talk before they blow each other away. Theirs is the central conflict in HEAT, and it is resolved over a cup of coffee.
