Scrolling down the list of replies, I realized that most of you all thought that it was overlong. No, I don't think so. The proper words you should use is "long but not overlong" because this movie would not be very good at all if it were shorter, and most of you thought it was really good which, I think your reviews would be bad if this film were any shorter. If you don't appreciate movies, you shouldn't be writing a reply on the movie! And don't tell me you don't get that "into" movies, well, refer to my previous sentence. Michael Mann wrote this movie and I was surprised. When first seeing it (finally) about a month ago, instantly it became a favorite. Writing a movie that is three hours long is tough, but being able to make the audience care about the characters, stay interested in the story to make an overall superb movie is a feat achieved not very often. The first positive thing about the movie is the script, second, you have two of Hollywood's greatest actors, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, third, greatness in direction and overall technical areas. Although Pacino and De Niro share little time on screen together, there is always the connection between them; they are very alike. The turning point bank robbery action sequence is incredibly tense, a highlight. The time given to develop the two main characters makes you root for both sides and you are faced with the fact that... I better not give too much away. Anyway I wanted to say that the last shot with Pacino and De Niro is terrific; it almost makes you want to cry, but you probably won't. A truly great conclusion to a contemporary classic. AND those who frown in disgust at the sight or mention of Val Kilmer should realize he is not that bad of an actor, no one is a burden to this film. FIVE STARS BABY!!! |
