Here's my point freesafetyblitz... No, absolutely not, an audience should not have to keep all of that in mind. In fact, I don't think P.T. Anderson gives a flying fuck about the audience. I think he made a film that made him happy, and the studio backed him up. I mean, why should P.T. Anderson have to conform to what audiences desire? People will still go to watch his flicks no matter what he does... why, you ask? Because people like his style. I mean, I think the only concession Anderson ever made to the studio's with "Magnolia", was to include Tom Cruise. I mean, just look at "Eyes Wide Shut", directed by another cinematic auteur who decided to make a film that was not for everyone, and you know what? What tha' fuck... let's throw Tom Cruise in it to make some dough. Then there is "Snatch", I mean, would it have been as much of a success in America if Brad Pitt hadn't been given a small role? On and on... people can make whatever films they wanna make and don't have to care if audiences like it as long as they have one or two things going for them... or in the case of Anderson, all of Hollywood scrambling to be in his films. "Hard Eight" was a great P.T. Anderson film, but it did awful at the box office and nobody really gave two shits about it until after "Boogie Nights", and now everyone sees how great it was. I mean, to hear P.T. Anderson talk about it, he just casts actors, then decides to write a scene for them, to showcase them personally, then he just fits all the scenes into one film. Personally I don't care if Anderson ever makes a film that tons of people like, I mean I almost hope he never starts churning crap that is mainstream and people will go to, and will be PG-13 so that it can make more money because more people will see it, etc... I admire any director who does what he wants to, when he wants to, writes his own scripts, and pretty much doesn't give a crap about what the studio thinks or not because he is like God... an omniscient being with the all-knowing powers to create or not create, to make a film that is powerful and dramatic, or to just hang out with his actor friends and have fun shooting scenes he likes. I dig that man, I really do. It's what filmmaking should be about... think of director's like Cassavettes, Fellini, Truffaut, Peckinpah, Godard, Kinski, etc... directors who make history, they don't conform to it... they make films the way they want to, and fuck everybody else. they create living, breathing art, not commercial spewage that will sell. People never appreciate them until they are dead. I mean, yeah, that's... yeah... [This message has been edited by Brock Landers (edited 05-30-2001).]
