This is one of the best films to come out of the 90s, and Paul Thomas Anderson did a fantastic job with it. Albeit, the movie is not perfect, but considering Anderson wasn't even 30 when he made it, I foresee great things in the future for him. The different story lines, or as it should be more aptly named, character lines, were all intriguing and believable. It could have been more interesting if they had been a little more interconnected, but subtlety was the aim here, and it does work. This movie is engaging if you let it be, in that it requires some thinking on the part of the viewer in order to fully appreciate its value. This is a character study, but not in a traditional sense. I do not want to give away too much if you have not seen the movie, so I will limit my comments to merely that Magnolia is a very emotionally driven film. The directing is superb, although I think Paul Thomas Anderson could have done a bit better job of condensing some of the voice-overs towards the end--not because they were boring, but because he did such a good job of "showing" us things rather than just "telling" us for most of the film. It was almost like he got a bit lazy. Nevertheless, it remains very powerful, and the acting is absolutely great across the board. Tom Cruise is very good in it, but I feel the rest of the cast got shorthanded from all the attention Cruise received. Not to take anything away from his performance, but truly the entire ensemble did great, from frantic Cruise to subtle William H. Macy. Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly also gave very memorable performances
