When he arrives at Harry's place, though, Martins discovers he was killed after being hit by a car. He even attends Harry's funeral, but afterwards, he can't get the possibility of something fishy going on out of his head. This is brought on by two conflicting stories: one where Harry was supposedly carried away by two men, which virtually everyone excepts, and one where there was a third man, which Harry's housekeeper saw. Was there a third man? Is Harry Lime really dead? And what was Harry up to all these years? THE THIRD MAN is one of the best non-Hitchcock thrillers that feels guided by the master himself ever made. The casting is pitch-perfect, from Cotten as the puzzled Martins to Orson Welles, making a memorable entrance and leaving a lasting impression as Harry Lime. The atmosphere is a perfect example of film-noir, the suspense an uninterrupted pattern of continuous discovery of danger afoot, and the zither score as catchy and memorable as it was since the film was first released in 1949. THE THIRD MAN is a cinematic masterpiece, a suspense classic that keeps you on your toes with a snowballing suspense plot, grade-A acting, a tigh script, and enough atmosphere and intrigue to fill two movies. |
