Topic: M. Night Shyamalan's "Wide Awake" (1998) Forum: JoBlo
Written & Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs) Stars: Joseph Cross, Rosie O' Donnell, Dennis Leary, Julia Stiles and Robert Loggia Genre: Comedy/Drama This film tells the story of 10 year old catholic school boy Joshua Beals (Cross) who has loving, affluent parents, but since the recent death of his grandfarther (Loggia), he' been trying to figure out the meaning of life and having doubts if that God does exist. When he gets into the fifth grade at his catholic school, he decides to go on a mission to find proof if God does exist and know to know if his grandfarther is okay in heaven. This was the second feature for writer/director M. Night Shymalan (before he took over the world with a little film called "The Sixth Sense"). Filmed in 1995 but released in 1998, Shymalan gives us yet another original film that should have been more noticed. This is both a funny and touching film which has great performances by the cast, but it's Joseph Cross performance that's the stand out in this film. The film has a very M. Night Shyamalan surpise ending to it, this is very heart warming film that is excellent and flawless in everyway. I recommend this film for anyone who is looking for something different from M. Night Shyamalan, or who want's to see Rosie O'Donnell play a nun. My rating: Wide Awake: 5/5 Has anyone seen this film?
