The trailers were great and I'm a big fan of Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow. Shallow Hal is a very original romantic comedy that had the potential to be a very good film. However the film is reduced to some very lame jokes. The film is basically about finding the inner beauty of someone which is a great thing however the film includes so many fat jokes that the film makers seem to have contadicted themselves. Jack Black who is a really funny guy most of the time should stick to supporting roles. He is not a very convincing leading man at all and Jason Alexander as his best friend drove me nuts with his unfunny jokes, bad toupe and his overall sleaziness. The two bright spots in the film were the ending and Gwyneth Paltrow. The ending was similar to Shrek's and it was very sweet and refreshing. Gwyneth Paltrow played her role beautifully, proving yet again that she is a competent actress. Shallow Hal had a great premise but lacked direction. What could have been a great comedy was reduced to immature fat jokes. Shallow Hal is definetly a big step up for the Farrelly Brothers after their terrible films Me Myself and Irene and Say It Isn't So.....but Shallow Hal is not a good film either. If you do see this film, see it for Gwyneth Paltrow, her performance carries the film. 4.5/10 |
