But, for the first time ever, a blind-buy turns into one of my all-time favorite films to date. The story is simple: A 12 year old girl's whole family is massacred by a sadistic DEA cop (in an over-the-top performance by Gary Oldman) and his crew while she is out buying some groceries. She comes back to the apartment where the goons still remain and finds a bloodbath. But instead of going insane at the sight of her family dead and letting the goons know that she was also part of the family, young Mathilda goes to a neighbor's apartment who just so happens to be the simple-minded, Italian hit-man, Léon. This is a great action film but it's also a great drama. These two opposites learn to love each other as friends and they develop a bond as Léon tries to teach Mathilda the tricks of his unusual trade. Natalie Portman gives one of the best child performances since Jodie Foster in “Taxi Driver”. Dialogue- 7/10 (Some memorable stuff here, including the infamous "This is from Mathilda") Violence/Gore- 7.5/10 (Some great action scenes and its always fun to watch Léon make hits on people) T&A- 0/10 (Nothing if only young Natalie was a few years older *sigh*) |
