I read it as an average action film, that did nothing more than show off some decent special effects. Now, reflecting on those thoughts almost a year later, I can fully realize how truly wrong I was. Spider-Man, to say the least, is a great achievement of a film. They present a character, Peter Parker, and show all sides of him. This is a super-hero, yes, but it is an emotionally flawed one. And the filmmakers show that. In our modern day world of film, this is an odd thing, and a thing that is greatly appreciated. There is also a strong love aspect to this film. Peter Parker is in love with the gorgeous Kirsten Dunst (who delivers a super performance), and yet Kirsten's character, Mary Jane Watson, is in love with the mysterious Spider-Man. Little does she know that Spider-Man is her old friend Peter. This is a beautiful love story. Just looking at the picture above sends chills down my back. The action in this film is simply spectacular. Starting with the first time Peter uses his "powers" in the cafeteria and the fight in the hall after that, to the final showdown on the bridge, I was in awe of the craftsmanship, explosiveness, and true awesomeness of these action scenes. They did a spectacular job with the action, and the special effects. At times they do look a bit cartoony, but if anything that adds to the overall charm of the film. Sam Raimi, a man who is known as directing the cult favorite "Evil Dead" films does a knock-out job here. He directs with style and passion, but he also uses his action sense to create spectacular scenes. The supporting characters, including the aforementioned Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's Aunt and Uncle, J. Jonah Jameson, Harry and Norman Osborne (The Green Goblin), are all fleshed out quiet well, and add an extra level of emotion, and intensity to the film. There is not a single two dimensional character, if not for J. Jonah Jameson, who works perfectly the way he is presented. After now watching this film 4 or 5 time on DVD, and having purchased this film, I can say that I truly love it. It is a spectacular Super-Hero/Action film that has an incredibly strong emotional sense, and is made incredibly well. It has terrific performances, and upon multiple viewings is an unforgettable experience. Report Card Rating: A Oh and sleek, nice review |
