FUCK PEOPLE HAVE TO STOP TAKING RATINGS AS SOMETHING RELEVANT! . . . . . . fuck! That being said. Hotel Rwanda *minor spoilers* Well that was somewhat dissapointing. Now don't get me wrong, the movie is very, very good in nearly all aspects. Don Cheadle definitely is the highlight of the film with a stunning performance that really surprised me. My biggest problem with it was that the movie really failed to emphasize on how very tragic the tutsi/hutu problems in Rwanda, and I blame the director. I had been led to believe that this movie was going to be emotionally draining and just very, very sad. I was both happy and disspointed when the movie turned out to be all but that. I felt I was watching "Hotel Rwanda: The Happy Cut". Modst of the movie has a very calm, leisurable atmosphere while the real tragedy is developing behind the hotel walls. I wanted to see the tragedy, but the movie seldom showed it to me. And every time I thought it was going to get very tragic, it didn't. In the end it closes with a very happy note and the only emotion I felt was when I listened to the ending credits song, which reminded me that this massacre that borderlines genocide actually happened. But I'm not going to blame the movie for not being as emotional and tragic as I expected. I'm going to blame it for not being as emotional and tragic as it should have been. I want to know why this whole problem was so horrible! Other than that, and the constant idea that the director's visual job was way too basic (I needed something grittier) and very, very few moments stood out in any way ("The Constant Gardener" managed to be realistic, gritty and very creatively shot). But that doesn't matter very much. The subject matter is handled with brains and maturity and the real story felt real because the tight characterizations and incredible performances. 9/10. A very good portrait of yet another tragedy in african history, but this isn't "The Constant Gardener". I wish I had felt more emotion.
