I seriously believe that if more people gave Femme Fatale a chance in theaters, it would've been more than just a cult hit. Brian DePalma is back in fine form for this 2002 release, after suffering through nearly a decade without a decent film (his last watchable one was the underrated Carlito's Way). Was the man spinning his wheels with junk like Snake Eyes and Mission to Mars? Apparently so, as no twisty camera shots or long takes could disguise the fact that the man was running out of parlor tricks. Femme Fatale is a film where DePalma finally brings it all together, all the stunts and tricks, into one deliciously entertaining, trashy film. It's interesting upon one viewing, but now, after seeing it three times, there are so many little details that I missed the first time, that it all adds up to the enjoyment. The photo collage created in the film by the Antonio Banderas character is in fact the director winking at his fans (and many critics) that all of this is a big in-joke, and if you're not with it, you may miss the point. It's delectable crap, with banal-to-bad dialogue being mercilessly rendered by the titular character played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. It has twists, a little bit of the ol' ultra-eroticism that DePalma has employed in the past (a subtle nod at the past complaints that all his films are mysoginistic) and ending that proves his remarkable ability to steal from the best (this time, Mulholland Drive) and yet make it work. Those who complain that his films are all style and no substance, cribbed from the work of the masters like some hack student filmmaker, are making valid points, but unreasonably shallow, imo. Grade: ***1/2 out of ****
