The biggest problem (and disconnect) in this movie is when Pearce goes back in time. At the beginning of the movie Pearce goes back in time so that he can be with his dead girlfriend again. And he hopes to keep her out of harm's way so that they can be together in the future. Alas, he goes back in time, finds her alive, but then she is killed while waiting for him outside the flower store. Now, let's fast forward to the end of the movie. He is captured by the Morloks, and thrown into a dungeon where he finds his Eloi girlfrend (Mumba) locked in a cage. In addition, the dungeon area also has Jeremy Irons sitting on a throne as some sort of Morlok super-being. After a brief discussion, Pearce is given the chance to go back to his own time. Pearce climbs into his time machine and grabs Jeremy Irons as the time machine starts zooming into the future. Pearce and Irons have a fight with Irons losing the battle as he falls outside of the time machine "bubble" while holding onto Pearce's neck in a strangle hold. Since the time machine is quickly moving into the future, and Irons is outside of the time machine "bubble", his body grows old quickly and decays into oblivion. Next, Pearce slows the time machine down to a stop (the year displayed is now 26,000,000 or something) and then throws it into reverse to go back to year 800,000. When he does get back to year 800,000, Mumba is alive and well, but where is JEREMY IRONS? Irons should also be alive again, because Pearce has now gone back in time to the point BEFORE Irons' death, and so he should be alive! But he's nowhere to be found. You can't change the rules in the middle of a movie like this. If Pearce can travel back in time to bring his girlfriend back to life, then the same rule should apply when he travels back in time later in the movie: his foe (Irons) should have also come back to life. As a final note, I was amazed that Pearce was able to break a steam pipe on the time machine so that he could disarm Irons but the escaping steam had no effect on the time machine. The time machine still worked flawlessly with an open steam pipe as Pearce had to go back in time (to year 800,000 something) to rescue Mumba. My rating 1/2 star out of 5 stars.
