It takes a look at America's violent past, and how chaotic it was, especially in 1860's New York. It is truly an excellent, powerful film that shows how much of a brutal time it was in America during the Civil War. The man who stole every scene was Daniel Day-Lewis. Wow is all I can say about his performance. He fit into his role the minute you saw him. I'm very surprised he didn't get an Oscar nomination for that role, considering that many critics thought he gave the best peformance in that movie. I thought Leonardo DiCaprio gave the best performance of his career as Amsterdam Vallon. Cameron Diaz was pretty good, but I didn't really think she was needed much throughout the film. In conclusion, Gangs of New York is a brilliant, powerful film that only increases my respect for Martin Scorcese (damn you Academy for not giving him an Oscar!). The second best film of 2002, behind Bowling For Columbine. 10/10 |
