| Starring: Julie Andrews (Maria von Trapp), Christopher Plummer (Captain von Trapp), Richard Haydn (Max Detweiler), Charmian Carr (Liesl), Ben Wright (Herr Zeller), Nicolas Hammond (Fredrich), Heather Menzies (Louisa), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Duane Chase (Kurt), Debbie Turner (Marta), Kym Karath (Gretl), Peggy Wood (Mother Abbess), Elanor Parler (Baroness) I know there's quite a few people that doesn't love this film but I am a big sucker when it comes to it. It's happy, entertaining and like M_M pointed out, a great 'feel good' movie. The casting of Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp is perfect, I could not think of another actress that could've done better than her in the role. She was delightful in all of her singing and it always puts a smile on my face, my favorites of hers being THE SOUND OF MUSIC, DO-RE-MI, and I HAVE CONFIDENCE. Christopher Plummer, a underrated but great actor who also made an impression in this film, his song number in EDELWEIS was beautiful and unforgettable. Peggy Wood as Mother Abyss gave the best performance in the film IMO, has a great voice, and gave a very realistic and endearing performance; her CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN song is my favorite song in the film, not only does it sound amazing but it symbolizes how important it is to follow your dreams and finding it, something I have thought about a lot in life. I usually despise kid actors, and most of the ones in this film are also the elements that prevents the film from getting a perfect grade, though they did good singing, with Angela Cartwright being the best of the bunch. Despite the long running time, the film has so much going on you wouldn't even care how long it is, just remember this musical masterpiece that is never sappy or sentimental, but something to remember by and a great film to show to your children. 9.5/10 |
