The Sound of Music 1965 Genre: Musical/Biography Rating: G Starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Eleanor Parker Directed by Robert Wise Rated: ****1/2 Plot Crunch: A nun who doesn't quite fit in is sent to live withn a retired navel captain and his millions upon millions of children. Slowly, but surely she wins the hearts of the children and eventually the captain himself. But when the nazis wish for them to join their army, they must head head for the hills.... Critique: "The hills are alive with the sound of music" and that's the happiest sound in all the world. The Sound of Music is the ultimate good over evil story. Julie Andrews in her finest, and it doesn't get much better than this. It's wholesome fun for the whole family, and she makes it that way. Chris Plummer is glumly aware of the magic taking place, but in the second half of the film, is passionate and catches on. Eleanor Parker as Baroness Shraeder was truly mean, and played the part with class and Peggy Wood as the Mother Abess did the same thing. Both parts, and that of Richard Haydn's Max Detweiller were horribly underused, but I guess that was for time restriction. Haydn was cute as Max, bringing amusement to the role. One person in the movie I didn't particularily care for was Charmian Carr. She was I guess alright nearing the end, but her hammy acting in "Sixteen going on Seventeen" was vomit inducing. And that "Wheeee" was so uncalled for. The rest of the children, were half and half. Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich) was a bit of a fruit-cake and was annoying in the small part he had. Same goes for Duane Chase (Kurt) although he seemed to football-teamish type. Heather Menzies (Louisa) was the quietest and ha da nice singing voice that made her likeble. Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) was my favorite. It was just the whistfulness and smartness of the character I guess, and Debbie Turner (Marta) and Kim Kyrath (Gretl) were cute as the youngest, and were both very obedient and had some strong presense for such little girls. All in all, from the cast they were good- Charmian being an exception. The script has some very VERY good lines in it, and I really liked it. I think that the adaptation was quite something, and from what I ehar it departs quite a bit from both the Brodway play and the real story, making it independant and fresh. The songs were the crowning jewels. I really liked Sound of Music, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, I Have confidense, My Favorite Things, Do-re-mi, So long, farewell and Edelweis, but never took to Climb Ev'ry Mountain, or Something Good. Sixteen going on Seventeen was catchy and upbeat, but I can't stand Charmian Carr, which was to bad since she seemed so nice. Andrews delivers each song flawlessly, and even though her acting was bad, Charmian Carr had a nice singing voice. The children sounded very good together, but individually (except for Carr and Heather Menzies) were not very good. Cartwright's voice was cracking, and Turner and Kyrath may have been to young, and the boys couldn't sing. Haydn and Parker's songs were cut- meaning they sang not once, and Chris Plummer and Peggy Wood- though they tried for the goal, had their songs dubbed since neither said they ahd good enough talent to do it. Bottom Line: One of the ebst feel good films ever, The Sound of Music is a timeless treasure all can get something out of. I ehar constantly it's saccharine and sweet, but it's not. It's just right to please the kids and the parents. Godbless Robert Wise and Rogers and Hammerstein for bringing us such a great and well directed film.
