FRAILTY 2002 Lions Gate Films 100 Minutes Rated R Directed by Bill Paxton Produced by David Blocker, David Kirschner, and Corey Sienega Written by Brent Hanley Starring: Bill Paxton, Matthew O'Leary, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe, Jeremy Sumpter Plot: Single dad Paxton claims to have recieved visions from an angel of the lord. His proported mission: to seek out and destroy demons who have assumed human form. Does he speak the truth? Is he deranged? Or is he decieved? His younger son (Sumpter) is willing to go along with it, but the elder boy (O'Leary) realizes that only he can put a stop to it--unless he gets axed first. Critique: A chilling film that truimphly heralds Paxton's newfound talent as a filmmaker as well as a performer. Despite the relative lack of gore, the eerie, intense atmosphere plays on our imaginations in a way that explict violence could not have accomplished here. It also suceeds on the dramatic level--the scenes of Paxton's daily life with his sons are realistically observed, only adding credibility to the bizzare things that happen down the road. No matter how creepy it gets, the director never loses sight of the human drama or the moral aspects of the material. Just because God says to do so, is it "right?" A cursory glance at the Old Testament should give pause to any freethinking person. The finest horror film of the year, with fine performances all around. Rating: 8/10 or (***1/2)
