| Posted by: Lady Dragon at September 17, 2002, 3:22 pm | | Topic: Reviews: Blade 2 Forum: JoBlo | | As a HUGE fan of the 1st Blade,I was *literally* counting the days 'till the sequel was finally released. When the big day came, I went to the cinema with not one but TWO King Size Chio Chips, and when I got my dirty lil' paws on the precious ticket, somehow my SIXTH SENSE told me that I was goin' to have a rockin' good time, even before the movie began. It starts with a gorgeous BLOOD-red New Line Cinema logo (usually it's blue...).I won't give away what the 1st scenes were all about, but afterwards, when the start credits began to roll with that kickarse score by Marco Beltrami,I knew I was going to SEE DEAD PEOPLE,lot's of 'em.And dead (disintegrating) vampires,of course. This sequel is all about straight-ahead-into-your-bloody-visage ACTION,loads of it.We get better, faster, meaner fight scenes, some of the ugliest villains to hit the silver screen since HANNIBAL (the Cannibal) and a rock-rap/techno soundtrack that'll grab you by the ears and won't let go 'till the very end (my favorite track has to be I Against I by Mos Def & Massive Attack.I was completely ecstatic when it kicked in with the whole Bloodpack gang walking in full armor!).The directing was impressive to say the least, the fights had awesome choreography and were a real pleasure to look at,in spite of the strong, graphic violence (the final showdown between Blade and the uber-Reaper Nomak is extremely brutal in a "fun" way).About the actors,well...Wesley Snipes is just cool, and waaay hot as Blade, the part fits him like a glove. His portrayal of a comic book hero is the best ever-he just kicks SPIDEY'S (or baby-face Tobey Maguire's...) blue butt all over the place ! I liked K.Kristofferson (Whistler) in the 1st part and I welcomed his return. Norman Reedus (Scud) plays a chain-smoking a**wipe who calls Blade "B." and is a damn "familiar" to boot. His demise is worth seeing...Luckily,Luke Goss (Nomak) stopped making lousy music and proves to be a great actor,he even managed to display strong emotions through all that make-up...Good job dude ! Now,on to the Bloodpack ! Leonor Varela (Nyssa) looks just FINE and I was hoping she'd bring some romance into the mix,she almost did,but just almost...Her death was undoubtedly the most beautiful scene I've ever seen on film ! Ron Perlman (Reinhardt) is one ugly mutha, but he cracked me up in every scene that he shared with Blade.Donnie Yen (Snowman) is just...WOW ! Too bad he's underused. The rest of the Pack are : Marit-Velle Kile (Verlaine, the redhead),Daz Crawford (the huge Lighthammer),Tony Curran (Priest),Danny John Jules (Asad),Matt Schulze (big guy Chupa who,BTW, doesn't have a bit of respect for the elderly...At one point,he really beats up poor ol' Whistler).Overall,Blade 2 delivers all the goodies from the 1st part, but with more blood, more azzkickin' a la Blade, more plot holes (but who cares ? This is an action movie !) and more koolness. The horror genre has been in a decline nowadays, with box office duds like QUEEN OF THE DAMNED,DRACULA 2000 (bad title!) or JASON X to name a few,but Blade 2 succeeds even where it's predecessor failed, and that's a truly rare achievement (we moviegoers all know the dreaded Sequel Syndrome...).Sadly,it still fits into the Underrated Masterpieces cathegory. How can crap like GOLDMEMBER or MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (what a title!) make more bucks ? Urrgh ! So,my bottom line is : GO! and see IT ! UPDATE : I just finished reading a script version featuring a sizzling SEX scene between Blade & Nyssa, among others...But I think it's better that they went with a later version 'cause it's simply more touching this way...Nyssa dies before they can share a single kiss... SO READ IT 4 YOURSELF ! |
