I haven't even seen the first one yet, I've never been a fan of the comic book, and the basic concept isn't one that would interest me right from the start. Not a big Wesley Snipes fan either, by the way.
But a friend suggested this movie this afternoon at the theaters, so I agreed to see it. As I didn't have high expectations, I wasn't disappointed nor happily surprised -- but I'll have to admit I was...satisfied. As everybody already knows, this movie is about Blade, the vampire hunter, having to team up with his enemies the vampires to fight uber-vampires, lead by a guy named Nomak, or Novak, or something like that. Yes, it's an action movie, and yes, it's ACTION all along. Luckily for the movie, that's exactly its strongest point: the action scenes. Guillermo Del Toro blows great style into them, making them original and real kick-ass. The cinematography and camera work sure are great in this movie, and they really add something to every sequence, particularly the fight scenes. Wesley Snipes and his impressive fight skills also contribute to do so, so that's another good thing.
Del Toro also decided to use a lot of special effects in most (action) scenes. Most of them work, but one of my problems with the movie was that some effects looked sloppy. There's a couple of jumps and stunts that clearly cry out "CGIIIII motherfucker!", and that sometimes cuts the rythm of some action sequences. But overall the action scenes are pretty neat and inventive. Right there you got the main strength of the movie: THE ACTION. But then, the movie hides a few other treasures, like:
1°) Some of the actors's performances. Outside of his fight scenes, Snipes didn't do much for me, but Kris Kristofferson and that guy who plays Scud pull their parts off nicely. Ron Perlman of course steals the show in each and every one of his scenes, doing the job as greatly as usual.
2°) What stands for a "final twist". When that little one showed up, I was starting to lose interest in the movie, but that little change in direction pulled me back into it. I started thinking "hey, maybe this thing actually HAD a script before shooting!" So there's this little message about genetic manipulations and stuff...it seemed like a good idea to me, and it makes one regain even more interest in the movie as the end draws near.
3°) Some shots were pretty gorgeous, playing with lights and stuff. Kudos to director Guillermo Del Toro once again.
4°) The look of the Reapers. The veins on their faces, scares, green-ish color of their skin, eyes, the way they moved...all that was pretty kick-ass. Nomak above all, with his hood, has the looks of a sweet sweet bad guy.
5°) The gore. The movie isn't all-out bloody, but...blood rains in this one, man, it rains! And there's a Reaper dissection and autopsy scene that's pretty gross...I really enjoyed it. And then there's the few things that don't work or miss: there's not one really scary scene in the whole movie, some CGI-effects look sloppy, and there's not many things that make this movie something you can absolutely, definitely, not miss. It's good, but it doesn't really stand out at any time. So here it is, Logan's final rating for BLADE 2 : 7/10 |
