Directing and cinematography are better, it has more action, more gore and a darker, more evil overall feel. Acting is mostly mediocre, but Snipes makes a good action hero and Ron Pearlman is having fun with his role. Unfortunately the plot has some huge holes in it and the films suffers from some obvious CGI. And why the hell do they always fast-forward those CGI stunt doubles? They look idiotic when they are moving twice as fast as the actors. It kills the illusion right away. Action is mostly well execetuted, but it get's choppy at times and is too repetitious. Happily Del Toro injects the film with lot's of cool visual style and even glimpses of poetry among all the extreme and even disturbing violence. Especially the very last, romantic death scene in the film was delightfully beautiful. But thanks to the rather incoherent and even dumb script at times, the film can't raise above it's B-roots. Despite that, it's an entertaining movie for the fans of the genre. 7/10. |
