Like many, I had my reservations going into T3. Linda Hamiltion deemed the script terrible, Edward Furlong is also absent due to drug problems and James Cameron also passed on the project. Things were not looking good but then I seen the great looking trailers and T.V. spots. My expectations were raised but I wasn't expecting anything to great. I expected it to be a fun action flick but not nearly as good a the previous entries. In the first five minutes of T3 my reservations absolutely vanished and I knew this was going to be one hell of a trip! Jonathan Mostow does a GREAT job. He brings the series back to it's darker roots in terms of tone and visual style. It's definatley more akin to the first Terminator flick then T2. Mostow brings his own flavor to the movie and doesn't copy Cameron's style. He keeps the pace breakneck but doesn't overshadow the characters and plot with action. Speaking of action; T3 has one of the best action sequences I have ever seen and that would be the amazing chase through the streets of Los Angeles. The other action scenes were also top notch. The shoot-out at the cemetery was cool and I loved the cameo! Man, this Mostow kid can handle action scenes. The effects done by Stan Winston and Co. were fantastic and the sets were also pretty cool if I do say so myself. In addition to the great action, we get three dimensional characters and a solid plot. John and Kate’s relashionship didn’t feel forced or tacked on, it was actually kind of sweet. John’s relashionship with the Terminator is much darker then in T2 for a reason I won’t mention here. Claire Danes and Nick Stahl had good chemistry and that always helps. Another thing that helps is good acting and they exceed in that department too. I do wish Ed Furlong had played John. He is a great young actor and his face goes hand in hand with John Conner. After a little while, I had no problem accepting Stahl as John although it would have been great if Furlong would have returned. It could have been worse….Shane West could have portrayed John (brrr, scary thought). Now let’s talk about Kristina Loken; She is damn hot and I thank God for her entrance scene. She is also a capable Terminatrix and when she wasn’t looking hot she was being extremely intimidating and looking hot. Her performance is on par with Robert Patricks scary as hell performance in T2. I liked the fact that the T-X was a better model then the T-1800 as it provided some mystery and suspense. The screenplay was sharp and witty with little nods to the other movies. I loved the bit with sunglasses. It doesn’t pretend the other movies don’t exist like many sequels do. It takes what we already know and expands on it. There were some cool twists I didn’t see coming and wow; that ending kicked major ass, so much so I upped the grade. It’s not the strong script, the acting, the great action or the amazing visuals…it’s Arnold. The man proves he still has what it takes. He delivers his one-liners with ease and he still has one rock hard physique. If they ever decide to make a Terminator flick without Arnold it just wouldn’t be the same. I’m amazed how well everything came together. Jonathan Mostow, Stan Winston, the cast and crew all went above and beyond and delivered one kickass action romp with likeable, developed characters, a strong plot and an amazing ending. 9/10
