The trouble is, while Deeds is a nice (obviously quite dumb) character, he's so at ease with what's going on that there's no tension at all. The comedy is never strong enough to encourage any laughs, and only the foot-fetishist butler (who can magically appear anywhere, it seems) is actually funny at all. Winona Ryder is bland as the lying reporter, which is an incredibly familiar role, and the film's eventual good-willed finale is both expected and damned boring. There's not much to say, because Mr Deeds is never overtly awful - it's simply hollow and standard, and feels like a waste of time. Clearly one of Sandler's worst films, it's just not very interesting. 2/10 |
