Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) inherits $40 billion dollars, and control of a big company which is in a troubling state after his uncle dies. Deeds eventually meets a young woman named Pam Dawson (Winona Ryder) who he thinks is a girl from a small little town, but in reality, she's a desperate news reporter looking for a story. How many times have we seen a movie about a really nice guy who lives in an unknown town, and has a passion for helping people out? Enough. How many times have we seen a movie about a desperate reporter, or anything of the sort, who goes undercover to do their job, but then ends up falling deeply in love with the person they are lying to? Enough. "Mr. Deeds" is basically just a mix of things we have seen all too many times. I've been saying it all along, I said "Mr. Deeds" would be the film that would get Adam Sandler out of the hell hole that was "Little Nicky". And I was right. "Mr. Deeds" is a good move on Sandler's behalf, for it's destined to become a smash at the box-office. But still, the movie is still not the great comedy I am patiently awaiting Sandler to come out in. Don't get me wrong, his movies are good popcorn flicks, but they are not much more than that. Sandler delivers a solid performance, as does his very attractive leading lady, Winona Ryder. And both, in my opinion, had very good chemistry together. But the real star of the show is Deeds' servant who has an uncontrollable toe fetish, Emilio, played by, in a hilarious performance, John Turturro. He steals absolutely every scene he appears in. "Mr. Deeds" delivered enough laughs to keep me satisfied. The movie is quite entertaining, and a lot of fun to watch. However, "Mr. Deeds" is lacking originality, and fails to bring any fresh material to the table. Running Time: 1 hour 40 minutes Grade: 6.5/10 Strider |
