I've loved all of Adam Sandler's movies: "The Wedding Singer", "Big Daddy", "The Waterboy, etc...but this one is his best, I must say. I wasn't expecting much from it but to have a good time, but I was relieved to find much more to take away from it. Adam Sandler was not his usual unrealistically goofy self. He was serious, sweet, down to earth and good-hearted. Of course, he also brought his usual goofiness under it all and I think it takes talent to be that subtly funny! It was hilarious when he's told that he's inherited $40 billion and all he can say is, "Hey, that guy isn't a cop!" about a man who said he had to get back on duty. (long story) I thought his greeting cards were hilarious and sweet! (The one for Pam/Babe was a knee-slapper!) He landed his rich guy helicopter at a Wendy's parking lot to get Biggie Fries and a Frostie. He says to Anderson, "You were dreamin' about those frosties, weren't ya Anderson?" and Anderson says, "I tried making one at home but it just wasn't the same!" He always greeted every creepy New Yorker with a hug, which probably just scared them! Deeds never cared about the money! When the rightful owner claims the money, Deeds says all he wants is the guy's friendship and the man says, "How 'bout a billion dollars?" and Sandler says, "Sure, why not?" I loved his character and he played it perfectly. John Turturro was a show-stealer for this movie as the "vedy, vedy sneaky" butler. "I tink you arde undaestimating da sneakiness, sird..." he says. Any scene he was in had me rolling in the aisles. His foot-fetish was hilarious. "I like feet...I do not know why," he says right before he disappears from the room within 2 seconds. He is so perfectly sneaky and he's involved with some of the funniest scenes. Like when Deeds shows him his black, frost-bitten foot and tells him to whack it with all of his might. The butler does so--with much urging from Deeds--and enjoys it. I loved that part! He also pops up mysteriously from the floor after trying to "change da socks" of Deeds! How can you not laugh at such antics? Then there's also the proposal scene in which Deeds uses him as practice for Pam a.k.a Babe. He begins to get into it and I cracked up! I'd watch any movie that he's in! Winona Ryder...well...she's not made for comedy, but I guess not everyone can be hilarious in this movie or it would be too much. Someone has to be the straight-man and I'd say she pulled it off pretty well. Unlike other critics, I think there was nice chemistry between Sandler and Ryder. I loved Anderson, evil Cedar's sidekick. He's in love with Wendy's Frosties ("You're likin' that, aren't ya Anderson?) and enjoys watching his boss get smacked in the head with 90-mph tennis balls! I got a kick out of his bald head, full beard and pipe that never left his lips. I loved him singing that little song as they landed. Let's see...there's also those characters that are minor, but you'll never forget! Crazy-Eyes is an actor who I know from many movies, but still don't quite know his name. He was perfect! I loved Deeds' other butler who was sooooo old and called him "safe" when he slid down the banister into a table of flowers. I loved the old man who Deeds carried across the street to get to the pharmacy. I liked Rob Schneider's routine Sandler movie cameo! I even thought John McEnroe's cameo was funny, even though a tree-stump could act better than he could! Another scene I particularly enjoyed was when Deeds arrives and finds that his apartment echoes. He gets all of his servants and maids to join him in shouting loud noises and listening to them bounce back against the high ceilings. The old butler even yells, "Boob!" "Mr. Deeds" was a sure-fire winner. I loved how he maintains his down-to-earth attitude. No matter how nice his apartment is and how many people want to be his false friend, he acts as if it's nothing. He uses his 40 billion in quite a hilarious way--you have to see this for yourself! I thought the ending was weak, but very "Deeds" until Winona Ryder storms in with evidence of a very special something that made the movie that much more perfect! I was dying of laughter and I also found the innocent, small-town love story adorable! I laughed, I cried (almost) and boy, did I laugh again! How can you not laugh when Deeds scales a burning building and throws 7 cats (one flaming) out the window and into safe hands (and a bucket of water), before saving himself and the cat owner. I don't understand why some critics have to overanalyze every movie. This is not a movie that is meant to be taken seriously. Is it plausible that a simple man could teach a room full of greedy people that money isn't everything and they'd be selling out their childhood dreams if they take this money? Not exactly, though I did love the guy who seriously needed a psychiatrist. Is it realistic that a man would inherit 40 billion from an unknown uncle? Uh, no! That's the fun of it all! The message is there for fun, not to change your life completely and inspire you! Just enjoy a movie, for once, Roger Ebert!!! You might take something else away from the experience--movies are fun, and this one sure is!!! I'd see it again just to see that butler whack his foot! A solid 9.5/10 |
