MR. DEEDS Adam Sandler's films go from mediocre to horrendous. His best film, in my mind, would be The Wedding Singer, and this would be my choice for Number 2. It has, luckily, a sweet (if overdone) romantic side and a surprising, if not incredibly strong, chemistry between the leads. It has has some surprisingly funny moments in it too. But it is by no means a great film. The performances in this film were good, considering the material. Sandler wasn't nearly as annoying as usual, no accent or irritating character quirks. So he's actually watchable. Winona Ryder wasn't terribly impressive, probably because most of the time she looked like she'd rather be out stealing something (well, I'm getting sued for that comment). The bright spot in this film was John Turturro. I'm convinced that man can play any character he wants well, and as Deeds' Puerto Rican butler Emilio, he only enforces that thought. Steve Buscemi's weird eye character was good for a chuckle on occasion, but Rob Schneider's blink-and-you-miss-it cameo sucked. The rest of the cast is pretty much give-or-take. The script by Sandler crony Tim Herlihy has, as JoBlo said, an overdone sentimental side to it, one that I think is sweet for a while but grows tiresome. I laughed much more during this film than during any other one of his films, even Singer, even though that isn't saying much. The unfortunately weak direction is typical of Steven Brill. So if you're a big Sandler fan, you will love this movie, guaranteed, as long as you get over the romantic stuff. But as a non-Sandler fan, I found that wore heavily on the movie, as well as some of the gross-out gags. The McEnroe part is great though. I'd like to finish with my favorite quote from this film, I laughed my ass of at it even though nobody else in the theater did. Why? No idea. Chuck Cedar (Peter Gallagher): Congratulations, you have a spastic colon. Cecil Anderson (Erick Avari): Well, that explains a lot. 6/10
