Super Troopers - 6/10 This harmless comedy succeeds in taking a group of nameless talents and producing a quite decent amount of laughs. However, I did not watch this movie in theaters, because of my predictions (which btw were correct) that the biggest laughs were going to be given away in the trailer, and the bulk of the movie would just be a rollar-coaster of hit-and-miss jokes. It screamed "Wait for the video" all the way, and because I did, I am able to say that I was at least somewhat entertained. A premiere movie for Broken Lizard, eh? I really had no idea, nor did I have a clue that this was at the sundance film festival nearly two years ago. It nods to Police Academy in a very big way, only that where that movie had a top-notch story, this one seems to be comprised of a lot of sketches that remained unedited for the most part, and the story took a back seat. The deeper I went into the movie, the less I cared about the whole 'we gotta straighten up or be discarded' plot, I just wanted to see all the jokes! A few of the laughs are memorable. I can name my 3 favorites off immediately - the opening scene (trailer giveaway), the scene involving an eventual fistfight between a couple of the 'troopers' and a fast food geek (watching it on the hidden camera afterwards was a scream), and a scene in a trailer where all the cops are fighting for their life against a hog.... excellent. I also enjoyed the overall kick of watching the cops haggling with the unsuspecting citizens - such as the 'meow' ticket and the old couple getting called "chicken fuckers" ... haha. Then there were some jokes that didn't work for me - such as the cow-banger (what the hell was that all about anyway?), the supposed humor in the showers with everyone pouring powdered sugar on this one dude (they even had to throw in a pecker shot... blech)... and I think somewhere halfway through the middle it just kinda got a little dull as the "story" was starting to be developed. It seems that Broken Lizard was wanting to premiere a movie along the magnitude of the Farrelly Brothers' era. Though I won't boost their ego that much by saying they accomplished it, they did manage to give the usually artsy Fox Searchlight Pictures the nicest comedy since Office Space 3 years ago. With work, this comedy troope could be promising! More on these nameless actors -- I don't recall one single person in this flick having a major role in another movie. Having said that, they did a really good job. The dark guy (mexican? asian? whatever he was....) was prolly the "Bubba Smith" character (Police Academy) of Super Troopers. The rest, although not very distinguished, gave me many a snicker. These infants to acting seemed to have better abilities than some of our big stars this year. Point being, it's out of theaters now, so without the annoyance of watching a less-than-expected movie in theaters, I believe you'll enjoy a video rental of this one.
