Bad Boys 2 Dir: Michael Bay Stars: Martin Lawrence, Will Smith, Jordi Molla, Gabrielle Union 2003 has not been a bad year at the movies; Pirates Of The Carribbean, Young Adam and Far From Heaven have seen to that and I already have 5 5 star films this year, which is more than twice the total 5 star ratings I gave in 2002 but fear not bad movie lovers Bad Boys 2 is here and it is absolutely apalling. I quite liked the first Bad Boys, the comedy worked well and the action scenes were good fun and so I was hoping for a decent sequel. I didn't get it. Bad Boys 2 how do I hate thee, let me count the ways. 1: This film is FAR FAR too long. It's an action/comedy that runs almost 2 and a half hours. It feels more like 2 and a half days. 2: It has no idea when to end. This film has more climaxes than Jenna Jameson in an 18 hour work day. Every time the (seemingly) climactic action scene kicks in the hopeful audience assumes this horrendous film is coming to its long asked for end and these hopes are dashed time and time again. 3: The action scenes are all the same. Cuts so quick they would annoy a room full of teenagers with ADHD, no real flow between shots, rendering the action nonsensical. The key problem though is a deeper one, we never really connect with the characters and so we can never really engage with the action, impressively staged though it is. 4: The script is at once moronic and confusing. The film has been chopped into so many little chunks by Bay that it is maddeningly hard to follow. 5: It seems really out of date. Ecstacy was big news in the 90's but it really isn't any more and that makes the film seem somewhat out of time. 6: One action sequence is ripped off from Jackie Chan's wonderful Police Story a film that deserves no association with this dreck. When I say ripped off, by the way, I don't mean that there are a few similarities between the two but that they are, almost shot for shot, the same film. 7: The spark has gone out of the main relationship in the film and, one sequence aside, Smith and Lawrence are desperately unfunny. 8: Jordi Molla is utterly wasted by a script that gives him nothing to do but be eeeevil. He gets through the film by chewing all the scenery he can. Molla is better than this film, Blow showed that, and seeing him wasted in this patehtic excuse for a role is almost sad. 9: As well as showing utter contempt for its audience Bad Boys 2 shows nothing but contempt for the people in the film. One horrific scene shows them digging around in hollowed out corpses for drugs. Surely we have more respect than that, even in Hollywood. Another moment has the top of a corpses skull falling off. In Michael Bay's world this is comedy. In BBFC's it is 15 rated. Frankly i question the sanity of both parties. All this would be excusable were Bad Boys 2 so bad it's good. It's not. It's a depressingly awful piece of cinema, made all the more so by the fact that the costs were far north of $100million and that the first movie was pretty good. It's not the worst film of the year but it is in a photo finish with The Matrix Reloaded and I'd only advise viewing it as penance. 1/5
