Bad Boys II- 8/10 Genre: Action/Comedy Year: 2003 Rating: US R/ Can 18A for Nonstop, Explicit Gore, Nudity and Profanity. Director: Michael Bay Cast: Will Smith Martin Lawrence Plot: The bad boys are back and are trying to stop a gigantic shipment of X. My Thoughts: I spent hours thinking this movie over. This wasn't an easy mark to give knowing all of the awful reviews I've read about it. I remember going into it thinking it would be the worst movie I've ever seen but it was far from it. Not that that is saying much at all but in this case (after thinking it over) it is. Director Michael Bay isn't exactly a liked filmmaker (by me in particular). His showboat antics are strictly for those who like swiching their brains off or are just plain ignorant. I mean that in the nicest possible way because ignorance is much different than stupidity. Most people who love Bay's films often don't understand the bad press surrounding the films. This is because normally the people who love his films aren't critics and don't usually think twice about what they are watching. I know this sounds strange from the guy who gave Showgirls an 8/10 but trust me, I know a thing or two about movies. So, why the 8/10 you ask? Well, Will and Martin are both hilarious in certain scenes (excluding some horrible racist comments and brutal emotional torture). The direction from Michael Bay suits the film in that it is rapidly cut, loud and chaotic. Another reason for the high rating is the gore. I normally don't rate movies based on gore but this is just so over-the-top that I cheered more than once. How can I not bring the gore up when corpses heads are ripped off, bodies explode, limbs fly, blood shoots out etc. This isn't your typical action movie, this is more along the lines of a Fulci action flick (like his film Contraband). Not that Bay can hold a candle to such a genius as Fulci, I just can't think of other action flicks as gory as this one (besides the war flicks of recent years but that's a different genre). There are some scenes that got to me personally and those are as follows; - The sequence where two cars are chasing each other over low income housing. I understand that the places have drug makers in them (notice how one of the characters quickly states this so we don't feel bad for the poor shmucks in the homes?). This sequence shows a complete disregard for human life. I can see all the gore in the world and not be offended but when people are plowing down homes that probably have women and children inside and think this is ok, what is the audience supposed to think? - Another scene is the sequence I refer to as the "bad parent" scene. A young man comes to the door to date Martin's daughter and the two guys torment this kid for no reason. He seems polite, kind and quiet, why the two leads feel the need to bully him is beyond me. - There are also numerous jabs at Cubans. I can't understand this, I know the history of Americans and Cubans but come on, the racism goes beyond joking. Those are the three big reasons this movie didn't rise above the 8/10 mark. Don't get me wrong, 8/10 is an excellent rating but this movie promises so much. You can't help but think that there was another film, buried deep within it that wanted to escape. It's so epic at times and so inane at others. This is a film I can't see a lot of reviewers liking but people just wanting a good old fashioned time at the movies will most likely get a kick out of it. Acting- 6/10 Will Smith and Martin Lawrence both have some great scenes together but their acting seems a little too confident at other times. Joe Pantoliano is amazing as usual and shines in every scene he's in. Directing- 1/10 or 10/10 You decide for yourself, I really can't. On one hand, the hardcore edge of the film is really nailed in the head with all the sharp details, lighting fast cuts and charged action sequences but on the other hand there's an emotionless quality to it that can't be overlooked. Gore- 10+ ***Top 5 of 2003*** Holy Shit! We get a graphic gunshot to the head, a blown out neck, many people gunned down with chunks of flesh and blood shooting out, a corpse is decapitated when hit by a car, a bunch of cadavers are opened up and hands are shoved inside looking for drugs, a kidney is pulled out of a corpse, the top half of a corpse's head falls off (crazy and hilarious at the same time), a bucket full of cut off limbs, a severed finger and lots of chunks, an explosion with blown off limbs, a body explodes into two halves (crazy shit!), and lots more bloody gunshot wounds. I'm probably forgetting something... Nudity- 7/10 We get a mammoth chested corpse (must have been a playboy/porno actor), some see-through shirts at a X dance club and some other T&A here and there. The ladies get Will Smith flexing his shit around and lots of naked fat men in corpse form. AxeHorrorŠ=Copyright Matt
