American Psycho 2000 7/10 Directed by: Mary Heron Starring: Christian Bale, Chloe Sevigny, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto Plot Crunch: Suave wallstreet businessman Patrick Bateman flips his lid and starts killing innocents at the turn of a dime. Critique: This movie sounded like a one trick pony when I first read about it, and guess what? It was. It was also a quirky, fast paced and funny. I had a blast watching American Psycho, and it kept the fuel going for it's running time, totally. Now, to start off on the good foot I thought Willem Dafoe was fantastic in this film. I mean, the man's movies are usually good but he was full blown badass here. That scene where he's on screen for a good chunk of tiem with Christian Bale was frantic and nerve racking. Watching Dafoe callously ask questions whilst Bale sweats, and his mind ticks, slowly driving him crazy. That's not what this film, I think was about totally. It was about finding yourself. Even if you turn out to be a Leatherface-esque maniac with a chainsaw and a ego issue, it's about finding where you belong. It's like Taxi Driver and other such films, finding what you believe in. On that note, fnding yourself is only one of the many things American Psycho has going for it. It's a brilliant commentary on society, and here I will commend Bale's breakthrough performance. Patrick Bateman was an insane man. But, it isn't his best. Leto and Dafoe provided good support throughout. The movie's controversy may be a let down to some as it was for me. I don't get what was so bad about it. I mean, come on. The book was far gorier. Far worse. This movie is Child's Play (literally) to the great Bret Easton Ellis novel. It's a poor adaptation, taking out the murder of a dog, old man, and a small boy and put in some rather shaky camera work. As well as the poorly executed and rather too cheap pornish for my taste. But it was good, like I said it was fun. A great refresher course for the young horror film makers of today, and seeing the slough of trash put out lately by the young makers of film. Pathetic. American Psycho was a good movie, nothing spectacular, but good. It's no Exorcist, but it may settle nicely at Halloween. |
