It had marvellous set pieces, incredible direction, lots of character development, great music and beautiful cinematography. And Daniel Day Lewis' Bill the Butcher is one of the most engaging characters to ever grace the screen, and Day-Lewis himself is absolutely incredible and was robbed of his Oscar. The Academy OWES him now. Leonardo DiCaprio is good in his role, and very entertaining to watch if his accent was sometimes off. I think Cameron Diaz deserved an Oscar nominatin, she was terrific, playing plenty of emotions to the perfect effect. Martin Scorsese is a director I haven't seen much of, but Gangs of New York intrigues me to see more of his work. I like seeing movies about America's history because I don't live there and am not knowledgeable about these things. When great stories like this come out of American history, it intrigues you if you're a foreigner (or a Kiwi) and you want to see more. A brilliant film. 10/10 #2 on my top 10 of 2002 One of the 10 Honourable Mentions on my Top 20 Movies of All Time List. dh1989, great to see someone liked this movie as much as I did. We have quite similar taste...this, HP... |
