Watched this again today...I can't believe I used to LOVE this movie, what was I thinking? SPICE WORLD (1997) THE GOOD: --This film succeeds at the rare times when it parodies itself. I liked a few of the scenes where an idea about a Spice Girls film was being discussed and the flaws of the film were being pointed out. It may have made the flaws in the film more obvious but it was quite funny and entertaining to see the writers and such taking the piss out of themselves. --The Spice Girls are terrible actors, however there are a few enjoyable supporting performances and the film has quite a star-studded cast. Richard E. Grant is great when he isn't throwing his arms around in joy for the pop stars and has a couple of good comedic moments. Alan Cumming has fun in his role and I liked him a lot, this film is obviously a waste of his talent. Stephen Fry has a hysterical cameo as a judge - his scene is the highlight of the movie. THE BAD: --During the credits of the movie where Spice Girls shadows dance around stupidly, a subtitle reads "based on an idea by the Spice Girls & Kim Fuller". Idea, you say? What IDEA is there in this movie? I'm guessing this 'idea' conversation went something like this SPICE GIRLS Say, Kim, we want to be in a movie! YEAH! That would be so cool! And then we could be even more rich and famous and we can promote our new album! KIM FULLER What a great idea! I'll be back with a script in five minutes! How accurate was that? Actually, it's probably dead wrong. "Spice World" would've taken less than five minutes to write because it contains not a whole lot of dialogue and instead settles for millions of musical performances for the Spice Girls to do. It's totally insulting to celluloid to have a film like this that replaces the word 'storyline' with the word 'advertisement'. This movie was made so the Spice Girls could show off their songs and clothes and richness, so they could talk to aliens, wake a boy up from a coma, break up fights, make people happy, and look normal and sympathetic towards the public. The Spice Girls want us to like them and it's obvious. Yet in the movie they're so bloody fake it's hard to even think of them as real people and not caricatures of stereotypical pop stars. --The Spice Girls themselves may be able to sell albums and marry soccer stars, yet they act to save themselves. Victoria is alright at the start, in fact she is kind of funny in spots, but her I'm-posh-and-love-clothes act becomes more than tedious fast. Mel B overemphasises every line she has and is just plain annoying, same goes for the sporty Mel C. Emma is as hot as the day is long and smiles well, but her delivery is constantly off. Geri is left as the best of the crew, being effective in a couple of scenes but otherwise she's just as horrid as the rest of them. Roger Moore is in this movie too and what on EARTH was he thinking? He's terrible! The Spice Girls are the worst actors in the film of course and deliver what could possibly be some of the worst female performances of the 90's. May they go and be rich and leave us poor film viewers alone! --By the end of "Spice World" I was about ready to poke my eyes out but I was happy it was ending. And what an awful way to the end the movie. The Spice Girls perform their hearts out as EVERYONE WE'VE EVER SEEN IN THE MOVIE dances away happily and everything is right in the world again! PLUS: BUY OUR ALBUM! God, what a sickeningly cheesy final sequence we got, the "Spice Up Your Life" montage is probably the worst scene in the entire film and I just felt so sorry for everyone involved with that scene. One day they may have CHILDREN and they may SEE this! How are you going to explain THAT to your children, huh? --This movie lacks effort even in the visuals department. The aliens look clumsily thrown together and their costumes sucked, how did the Spice Girls even understand them in the first place? Oh, right, they're magic, I remember! The Spice Girls can do ANYTHING! Anyway, the film looks crap, especially towards the end when the 'action' begins to kick in. When the girls are on top of the bus they're clearly standing in front of a blue screen. When the bus goes over the bridge its made out as a joke because it looks so bad and obviously the filmmakers are trying to cover up their mistakes by shoving another unfunny joke in our faces. When the aliens are dancing during the aforementioned AWFUL "Spice Up Your Life" montage they're doing it on a cheap stage with a star background. All of these things are just further evidence of how rushed this piece of shit was. --"Spice World" is totally unfunny. Almost every attempt at a joke fails. The dance instructor was lame and I cringed throughout that entire army sequence. All the stuff with the evil scheming tabloid reporter was a stupid attempt at making the movie longer. The aliens are totally random and NOT funny in any shape, way or form. Pretty much every one-liner by the Spice Girls is howlingly lame. Hey, this review - is it funny? Hmm, maybe it's funny. Or, it could be funny! How about it's…funny? This is a direct take-off of the awful Gucci dress joke made in the film, and read it again. If you laughed, see the movie now - you'll love it. RATING: 2/10 - Yes, I'll admit it. I did used to like…ok, LOVE, the Spice Girls. I'm just now realising my terrible mistake…what on Earth was I thinking? This is a godawful film, if it can even be called that…a 90-minute music video advertisement is more accurate. An absolute embarrassment to all involved! IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND: 8 Mile (7/10) Almost Famous (10/10) Duets (7/10) Get Over It (7/10) The Suburbans (4/10)
