When films are utterly torn apart by critics and audiences alike, and generally peed on by existence itself... you may feel a little cruel in agreeing with them. And I must say, The League is every bit as cheesy and shallow as it's made out to be. But it is not the worst film in the world. My vote for that little treasure still goes to The Fast and the Furious. I hate you, Paul Walker. Ahem. Firstly, obviously, these gentlemen are not extraordinary. Anybody who's actually read the books these characters came from (evidently the scriptwriters haven't) will find their heads spinning. For instance, Mr. Hyde is in fact small than Jekyll, and now he's quite simply the Incredible Hulk. And also devoid of his supposed boundless capacity for evil. Sort of defeats the point of being "Jekyll's other side," doesn't it. Dorian Gray, tagged on to the original comic-line up (I haven't read it), is amusing enough, but feels too unimportant and fleeting. Mina Harker is a good vampire (following on from the "vampires with reflections" in the lame and stupid Underworld) with no hero motives, and we have an invisible man, with the most constantly irritating cockney accent I can recall hearing. Tom Sawyer is a pointless son-figure for Sean Connery, and Connery himself takes such unnecessary centre-stage that really, the other characters become superfluous. It doesn't help that their mission is about to finish moments after it's truly started. Captain Nemo, here just to get our heroes from place to place, is at least amusing (that beard!), but his sudden super-human sword reflexes seem a little... odd. The whole concept is basically a dumbing down of old ideas, taking only the visceral, stupidly gratifying traits from each character (literally - it's part of the villain's plan!) and showing them off. Lots of unconvincing CGI ensues, along with some weak lines and a definite frustration between cast-members to get a word in. Even the trailer claims that the country "calls on the services of one man." It would be nice if Connery's Allan Quartermain was more than an aged Indiana Jones, but he's not. The hideously predictable "lost son" plot-line irritated, too. Ho, hum. It's very stupid entertainment at best. Mercifully brief, low on everything but time-passing visuals and wasting practically every oppertunity for real inspiration, this is dumb as dumb gets. Even Connery fans will be a little dis-engaged. But it is not as bad as The Fast and the Furious. (4/10)
