| Before I start, i"ll just say that it wasn't the mess I've heard so much about, or was expecting. What worked: -The cast and characters. Connery, Townsend, Flemyng, Curran, Roxburgh, and Wilson were noteworthy in their roles, and turned in very good performances. West, and Shah weren't as successful in theirs, but were good enough with what they were given. Wilson and Curran could've benefitted greatly with some extra screentime, since I had some unanswered questions with Mina Harker, and wanted to see more of The Invisible Man. I don't have many complaints with the characters and performances, even though Shane West stuck out like a sore thumb sometimes. -The action. Sure, there was a lot of fast cutting that didn't always make it comprehensible, but I had no qualms with it, and was having a good time with it, especially the library scene. -Most of the special effects. There were some bad ones, like most summer movies, but the effects for Jekyll and TIM were well done. -The lightheartedness. Despite some of the elements in the movie, I liked its spirit and tone to a surprising degree. It's not quite The Mummy, but has hints of Indiana Jones, and other swashbuckling movies. What didn't work: -Those expecting perfect logic will be pretty damn disappointed. There's a lot of plot holes in the movie, like racing down Venice streets, Sawyer being able to drive without practice, and other story elements, are pretty evident throughout. But I wa able to excuse some of the bits since the movie's universe is so obviously not ours, like with the tanks and automatic weapons. -The villain for most of the movie. The Phantom wasn't menacing, and didn't seem like a threat (he ran away for most of the movie), but when he was revealed as Moriarty, then he actually made an impression. But until that time, he didn't live up to any of the Marvel/DC movie villains. The only somewhat redeeming factor was I liked some of his costume. For what the movie was, I enjoyed it. It became odd at various points, with Nemo knowing kung fu, Harker being a swarm of bats, and Sawyer realistically needing to be in his early 50's by 1899, but just excusing some of it, i had a good time. It may not be X-Men 2, but it's nowhere near The Avengers. In the illustrious filmography of comic book movies, I rank it the 4th best I've seen, after X2, Blade 2, and Blade. My grade: 7.5/10 |
