After the boring first 15-20 minutes or so, the movie really gets into gear when Chris, Jessie, Carly and Scott enter the cannibals cabin. That was a horrifying and absolutely intense sequence in which I was gripping the couch the whole way through. From there on out, the scares just keep on coming. There's a freaky diversion in the cannibals' car yard (where we see how much damage the bastards have done), a suspenseful chase leading from the top of a watchtower to the treetops and finally the big showdown back at the cabin. The scares are all well built up and had me jumping and biting my fingers (no, I'm not a cannibal) in anticipation. The cinematography was awesome; it constantly gave me this feeling that someone or something was watching the characters. There is some good gore scenes in the film (though not enough), the first kill is especially gruesome (though a bit quick) and I loved the arrow-through-the-eye scene (very funny and also quite freaky and shocking). --The setting of the forest is familiar yet it is utilised very well. We do get scenes in typical Texas Chainsaw-esque cabins and huts, but rather than watching an annoying actress run around bushes like in that film, the forest is much more well used here. There is a particularly original sequence using tree branches and another in a waterfall. I also thought the forest always had this eerie atmosphere and never quite felt the characters were safe, which left me in a state of uneasiness throughout the movie. --Something that has been lacking in slashers of late is the annoyance of not being able to actually care for the characters. This is not the case in "Wrong Turn". I liked the characters and the likeable actors they were played by. Eliza Dushku (one of the top 5 hottest women on the planet) made a great heroine as Jessie and her inner struggles (letting her friends die) were a nice touch. Jeremy Sisto was especially charismatic as Scott; I think Sisto is just awesome and really wanted his character to live in the movie. The character of Carly can be a bit annoying at times with her constant screaming but she did have a good fear and desperation about her. Desmond Harrington suffers from lack of character development in the movie, though he does what he can. Yes, I said 'character development' and 'slasher' in the same paragraph. In the rare action breaks, we get some nice character interaction scenes that inform the audience of the characters personalities and reactions without emphasising it so much that it is cheesy and lame. I also really appreciated not only caring for the characters and wanting all of them to live but that the two leads don't go off and kiss at the end of the movie. I presume the two stayed together but I was happy I didn't have to see that cliché that I was so uncomfortably anticipating (all movies seem to have this nowadays). THE BAD: --The cannibalistic mountain men are the only big problem with the movie, other than a few daft lines (I think one of the girls screamed out asking if someone who was dead was OK at one point). They're alright villains with the ability to be threatening at points, but given the concept of the film they should've been so goddamn scary that you have to look away, and I never had to. Their makeup is presumably good, though it's never fully brought into the light, I wanted to see it entirely and we never got that daylight close-up shot of them. I think the movie should've been a little longer so the audience could find out how they got to look so grotesque (we're told on the back of the DVD cover and in some newspaper clippings, which is crap). A bit more gore would've been good too, come on you woodsmen you, these dirty teenagers went through your cabin…don't let them get it too easy! --This is technically an extension of the last point, but that paragraph just looked too ugly because it was so huge (give me a break, this is my 100th review!). The final twist in the movie, with that giggling cannibal killing the policeman is ludicrous. You're telling me he can survive falling out of a tree, being hit with an axe in the heart and then blown up? Are these super-cannibals? Well, the movie never told us anything about them…they might just be. That giggling cannibal might've survived to be the villain in a possible sequel, though I think that gas attendant is a cannibal too, he will probably take the role of chaser-downer if there ever is a "Wrong Turn 2". That would be cool because then we can finally learn something about these m-effers. But he still couldn't have survived…na na, and not every movie needs a twist-in-the-end. The writers should've just left the ending alone. RATING: 7/10 - So it's not going to win any awards and the critics certainly won't be raving, but "Wrong Turn" remains a solid, fast paced slasher flick for anyone who enjoys the genre (me included). IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND: Hannibal (8/10) Jeepers Creepers (7/10) Jeepers Creepers 2 (7/10) The Silence of the Lambs (10/10) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre/1974 (4/10) |
