The big flaw of the film is that it is too long, draggy in segments, and in need of some editing, and this waters down the big implications of the film - that the tobacco industry puts cancer causing agents into cigarettes! If you concentrate on the flawed hero, Jeffrey Wigand, played masterly by Russell Crowe you have a good character study. I liked that though a genius scientist he had many personal and emotional demons and I felt much sympathy for him. However, director Mann made Al Pacino, as 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, the focus and hero of the film instead of Wigand, when in fact Wigand should of been made the focus. The screenplay and music too lofty at times and didn't mesh with the technical storyline. I feel that this film had the potential to be very good to excellent if some deft editing was executed. |
