SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (1999) THE GOOD: --"South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" is the funniest film of 1999, perhaps even the entire decade of the 90's. The film is able to make such immature and lame things funny, such as pointless fart jokes and Satan and Saddam Hussein having a sexual relationship. There are a number of unforgettably hysterical musical numbers and set pieces, and this is certainly one of the most quotable movies ever created. I would be more specific with this kind of thing, but there is simply so much funny dialogue and sequences in the movie I just can't remember all of them. --Who knew that a show like South Park could be a musical film? I didn't see this coming at all. There are heaps of musical numbers in the film though, they're all well written and constructed, very funny and most of them have a message and plot-developing device to give them more meaning. South Park the show and film is often a topical conversation between my friends and I, and I'm constantly asked the question, 'what's your favourite South Park: The Movie song?' This is a very hard query to answer, as all the songs are so enjoyable and consistently original. "Kyle's Mum's a Bitch" is one of my favourites, as Cartman is terrific. The Oscar-nominated "Blame Canada" is also hilarious, "What Would Brian Boytano Do?" has a neat rhythm, "La Resistance" perfectly takes the piss out of those serious war songs and "It's Easy, M'kay" features some great remedies for swearing. In the end, it's hard to go past "Uncle Fucka". What a hysterical piece! I just love it to death, simply because it's so bloody funny - I defy you not to bust a gut laughing at this song! In the end, though, all the songs in the film are awesome, and the soundtrack is definitely worth a buy. --One of my favourite things about "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" is that Trey Parker has gone ahead and assumed what's going to happen when people see this film. This is shown very cleverly and in a subtle manner through Terrance & Philip. Stan, Kenny, Kyle and Cartman are off to see an R-rated film and find out it has a lot of profanity, which influences them to talk badly and use naughty words. Isn't that, to some extent, what could happen when children watch THIS film? On repeat viewings (for me, there has been 20+ repeat viewings of this film) this comes across as an even more interesting point. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have not only offered controversy through the film but outside the movie theatre too, and all in one go they've actually offered up some simple resolutions. It's the kind of thing that makes you appreciate this movie even more, because it shows how much is really going on at its core. --To those reviewers and critics who have said "there's nothing more going in the South Park movie than profanity" I say "NAH-NAH!" There is A LOT more going on in this movie than you think. Stone and Parker bring across the messages of how naïve parents can be nowadays, and how parents do what THEY think is best rather than what is best for their children. There are also some issues of discrimination in the film, shown in a funny and insightful manner with the scenes of the army and Operation Human Shield. Even better, the film looks deep into censorship and how it can affect the public in negative and/or positive ways. This film has a subtle "stand up for what you believe in and don't worry about censorship and what other's think" vibe, which is very hard to find in films lately. That it is shown through things like cartoon men farting on each other and screaming the F-word a billion times only further proves how damn clever Stone and Parker are. --For long-time fans of the show (such as myself), "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" has some nice touches. George Clooney's appearance as a doctor is a great mockery of his role on ER, there are various appearances by little-known characters from the show and Kenny finally takes off his hood. Very cool. THE BAD: --There isn't a hell of a lot wrong with this movie. Some won't like the crappy animation, but that's just the style of South Park. I also wouldn't recommend this to people who are offended easily, because it definitely takes the piss out of everything it can (one of the best things about the film for me). I felt there was a little too much exposition dialogue at the beginning of the movie to get people in on the South Park vibe. In my opinion TV-to-movie films always work better when the creators just assume the audience knows what everything is all about, and then this exposition doesn't stand out as awkward on repeat viewings. RATING: 9/10 - Trey Parker and Matt Stone once again prove their worth as comedic filmmakers, crafting one of the most entertaining animated films in years. IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (8/10) Quills (9/10) Scary Movie (8/10) Scary Movie 2 (4/10) Three Kings (8/10)
