I'll join JoBlo on this one. I like Say Anything. I think it's probably one of the better teen romances. That said I was mystified when EW picked it as the #1 Romance of the Modern Era. Don't get me wrong there is much to admire about the film. John Cusak gives a winning performance as Lloyd Dobler the misfit who hasn't a clue what he wants to do, very little ambition or goal direction. And his romance with Ione Skye's Diana is utterly charming. The way they came from totally different worlds and yet connected at some deeper level that went beyond intelligence and his world and her world was beautiful.
And John Mahoney's creepy dad is worth the price of a rental alone. Not to mention a knowing, warm script that expresses respect not contempt for it's characters. Plus one of the great movie songs no not In Your Eyes I'm talking the song of the movie Joe Lies. (That scene alone is worth seeing the movie. Lili Taylor rocks!) But I think on the whole this film is good but not great. And certainly not the number one modern film romance. 7/10 [This message has been edited by Kavan (edited 02-08-2002).]
