First off, I am by no means one of the hardcore Star Wars fans. I do consider myself a big fan, and a big fan of sci-fi in general. But I'm not one of the die-hard fans who reads all the books, all the comics, and knows every little factoid about the entire universe. So the continuity and such doesn't bug me about Episode II. But here's what does bug me... First off, the acting. Hayden Christensen is no better than Jake Lloyd. His performance is stale, fake, and bland to no end. The story is completely nonsensical, and derivitive. Did anyone ever stop for a second and ask themselves WHY Padme even falls in love with Anakin in the first place?! He's a heartless, rude, creepy jackass. He also spends part of the time praising Obi-Wan...then he bitches about him. He spends half of his screen time making Padme uncomfortable. Then suddenly, she decides she's deeply in love with him. What? And why would Yoda fight Dooku with a lightsaber? He wouldn't do that! He only did it because Lucas has to please the ten year-olds in the audience. And the awful plot leads into the awful dialogue. Jedis do not say "This party's over!" to their enemies. Everything Anakin says about his love for Padme is cornball, recycled garbage. But my biggest problem is the special effects. George Lucas cares waaaay too much about making the special effects. They have overtaken everything charming and attractive about the Star Wars films. They are loud, atrocious, obnoxious, and overwhelming. It takes away from the acting, the atmosphere, and more importantly: the screenplay. The overwhelm the screen. The entire movie is sooooo artificial and fake. Not to mention cartoonish. Just because you can create all digital effects, doesn't mean you have to. I really think Lucas has lost his marbles. The Phantom Menace: 5/10 Attack of the Clones: 5/10 A New Hope: 9/10 The Empire Strikes Back: 10/10 Return of the Jedi: 9/10 Here's hoping Episode III turns out better...though I'm sure it won't. |
