Jackson, Christopher Lee, Frank Oz, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, Ahmed Best, Oliver Ford Davies, Jimmy Smiths, & Temuera Morrison. Ten years after "The Phantom Menace", Queen Padme Amidala(Natalie Portman) is now a senator. She and the republic are still having many problems. Padme discovers someone is trying to kill her. Upon the request of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine(Ian McDiarmid), the jedi council send Obi-Wan Kenobi(Ewan McGregor) and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker(Hayden Christensen) to protect the senator. However, things don't go as planned. Obi-Wan is sent to seek out the assassin while Anakin stays to protect Padme. I am one of the very few who enjoyed "The Phantom Menace". It wasn't a great movie, but it was fun. My only pet peeve with the film was the "kiddie" feel to it. And that's without mentioning the cheesy dialogue. The second installment of this new trilogy, "Attack of the Clones" is an entirely different story. It's much darker, and has many adult themes. This is one of the things I loved about this movie. And yes, you heard right, I loved this movie. Before I go any futher, I only had two problems with the flick. First, the dialogue between Anakin and Padme in the romance part of the film was a bit corny. It was hard for me to believe that Padme would fall deeply in love with Anakin despite all the shit he was spewing to her. Oh well, the dialogue did not stop me from enjoying the romance. It turned out to be much better than I thought it would be. My second problem will be revealed later on. Now, it's time for the good stuff. The action sequences were just mind-blowing! Especially the final fight towards the end. "Attack of the Clones" was action-packed unlike "The Phantom Menace". Moving on, I noticed a vast improvement with the characters. I loved them all. I was actually able to develop an emotional bond with every character. Well, then again, not "every" character. I recall wanting to kill Jar-Jar Binks. Speaking of that annoying bastard, I was so glad he was reduced to a cameo appearance. But still, those five minutes he spent on the screen were unbearable. I guess you could say he pissed me off. I was so happy to see the humor in the film left up to everybody's favorite droids, C-3PO and R2-D2. Every scene they were in was just a riot! Their chemistry was just as good as it was in the original trilogy. And on a related note: Something happens to C-3PO that is so memorable. It was so funny, it almost had me rolling off my seat. Ewan McGregor was just brilliant as Obi-Wan Kenobi. He had so much more to do this time around. In "The Phantom Menace", he had absolutely nothing to do except sit inside a ship. Anyway, McGregor's character is more charming, witty, sarcastic, and wise. Basically, he was more of the Obi-Wan Kenobi we all saw the late Sir Alec Guiness bring to life in the original trilogy. Natalie Portman was just amazing as Padme Amidala. I thought she delivered a decent performance in "The Phantom Menace", but I thought she was a bit wooden. This time around, she delivered a flawless performance. Portman's character has change so much since the last time we saw her. She's much more human. We definitely get to see a different side of her. Hayden Christensen was awesome as Anakin Skywalker. He was just how I imagined him to be: A tormented and arrogant human being. Christensen was the perfect choice to play the future Darth Vader. Ever since George Lucas annouced who was going to get this part, I stood by Lucas' decision despite all the arguements I had with people who thought Lucas did a horrible job casting the role. And Lucas, like always, did not disappoint me. As for the new characters, I loved Christopher Lee as Count Dooku. He was a bad-ass! Lee was charming yet evil at the same time. Temuera Morrison was fantastic as Jango Fett. He kicked so much ass! My second problem with this film is regarding Jango Fett however. He was such an awesome character. And I wanted to see more of him, but I didn't. It seemed to me he(Morrison) didn't have much to do. But hey, I shouldn't complain. He(Morrison) had more screen time than his offspring did in the original trilogy. I was glad to see Samuel L. Jackson get more screen time. He kicked ass! Seeing him kicking ass with his purple lightsaber was a wonderful sight to behold. And finally, we must talk about the almighty Yoda. He deserves an frickin' oscar! Yoda does something that will have every Star Wars fan jump out of their seats in joy and excitement. This is exactly how I felt. When I saw this particular scene, I cheered at the top my lungs. It was a classic moment I will never ever forget. "Attack of the Clones" is the film every Star Wars fan has been waiting for. It exciting, entertaining, and a lot of fun. And oh yeah, it manages to surpass "The Phantom Menace" easily. I loved every minute of this film! It's definitely one of the year's best! George Lucas and the force are back once again, and better than ever! RT: 2 hours 25 minutes Grade: 10/10 Strider |
