The hype for the film was incredible. Although I did not want to be influenced by it, its grasp was impossible to avoid. No matter how big the hype, my initial disappointment of the film was not a result of it; the reason of my disappointment was actually because of my attempts to avoid any information about it. The movie did not really seem that complex. It is about the journey of a hobbit, a small and jolly creature, which has the giant responsibility of returning the "One Ring" through the Mountains and Hills and Caves and Trolls and Orcs and Demons. Its message is clear: through the story of the small hobbit and its quest, I felt that Tolkien was probably trying to relay a message to us as well. If that small creature was able to assume his quest, we should be able to listen for our own calling in life and act on it as well. Because I avoided all information, that is the only theme of the movie that I was able to absorb in my first viewing. Because of the long setup, the hosts of characters that were quickly introduced, and the missed dialogue that occurred when processing that information, I admittedly missed a lot. When I bought the DVD, I got my second chance. Upon review, I realized that there was a lot more to the movie. The movie is as much about the side characters as it is about Frodo, the main character. I could detail the side themes from each character; however, I don’t think that it would be interesting to read. I simply will give my hint and leave it to the viewer to recognize. The sound and cinematography for this film were excellent. Greens were incredibly green, the foreground and background were both incredibly crisp, there were huge sets, and the CGI looked and felt real. But, unlike Road to Perdition, there is much more to this film than the cinematography. The acting was flawless across the board and the attention to detail by Peter Jackson was extraordinary. I am not yet a “fanboy”, but I fear that in future viewings and episodes, that I will be. The film is that good if you give it the chance. 9/10 Note: The sound quality and video quality of the DVD actually exceeds the quality of the theater. If you have access to the resources (or if you have the resources and do not have the DVD), I recommend that you find a way to utilize what you need to. It is undoubtedly the single best looking and sounding DVD that I have seen (previously my favorites were T2: Ultimate Edition, Seven: Platinum Series, Harry Potter, Cast Away, and Star Wars: Episode 1). If you have the resources, this will immediately be your reference DVD. [This message has been edited by psudoazn (edited 08-11-2002).] |
