Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring - 9/10. This was a huge-budget movie. (I think the trilogy is an estimated $500 Mil??) With all that money, you can create virtually anything, provided you do well enough to make that money back. This movie was great. The sets were real. The CGI was well-done. And the movie overall was interesting and mostly believable. This series was designed to be one of those over-the-top stories that people will still be talking about 20+ years from now. It's not your basic throw-away movie like any other. Even if you haven't much interest in fantasy, you can get a little bit of something out of this movie. Most of it is built around fantasy, but there's PLENTY of action, pretty creepy horror w/monster a-million, and comic relief (intelligent comedy, mostly on behalf of the slow-witted 'Sam'). Personally I enjoy a fantasy world like this, when it's done right (such as New Line's predecessor, "Dungeons & Dragons). It takes me back to when I was a kid, and got a kick out of role-playing games. The story of the ring is one that is unforgettable. It's how the movie starts. Our producers and writers don't want us to get lost in a 3-hour long movie, so they explain the background of what's going on right off the bat. Good job! It's one of the better openings to a movie I've seen. And even though the movie IS three hours long, it goes by pretty quick. I really didn't feel as if I'd been there for 3 hours (my achine butt might have a second opinion.. lol.. but anyway..).. this is something that the other monster length movies failed to accomplish. I remember scenes of 'Titanic' where I just thought "Come on.. come on..".. same in 'Pearl Harbor'. Most of the time in a lengthy movie you can think of a few things that could have been spared. But not here! Every moment was one I didn't want to miss.. every scene was important to the film.. and there was enough action & intrigue to accomplish this task. The cast: Our lead, Frodo, is probably the most well-developed character. As a hobbit (if this is the cause), he seems to have the willpower within him to resist the evil curse of the ring, even when wearing it. He is also either really lucky, or really unbelieveable (take your pick). Gandalf stands out as one of the strongest, toughest, quickest, most magically-inclined characters. It's a shame we lost him.. we would have been a very important character for future chapters of the movie. Sam - not too bright, gives us our comedy angle. Bilbo - A bizarre, hermit-like old man that appears from time to time to explain some things, but is drawn to the ring. Overall, a great cast of characters. And the *monsters*!! Perhaps the greatest effect of the entire movie (the monsters and the sets). The cave troll was an abomination. Goblins Galore (creepier than any goblins i can remember.. DAMN theyre ugly!). The ring wraiths.. perhaps the most eerie, dark, & mysterious monsters of the movie (they were once great rulers I believe). Here are the only flaws in the movie: Some stuff is just downright UNBELIEVABLE: We must keep Frodo alive, obviously! But just how much punishment can he take? The chick casting the spell on the river was the most unbelievable part I can remember. This and the great number of goblins against such a small group of ringkeepers.. It's like the monsters just line up to attack. They don't all sling their arrows at once (the logical way to attack). And the one warrior taking 3 arrows and still fighting until he collapses, then living just a LITTLE LONGER! Okay, maybe I do think too much, but some parts just weren't believable. And I'm 50/50 on the ending. Most of the time when you have a triology, you COMPLETE each chapter before the next movie comes out. This movie seemed to have just ended with a "come back for the next one!" sort of gimmick, without completing the task at hand. Maybe that's a turn in the right direction here, dunno. But, overall, it was great, the sets and looks of the movie are so incredible believable that the less believable stuff can be overlooked. Everyone should give this movie a shot. It's very good work and very hard and expensive to make!
