What makes this movie good is that fits the requirements of the regular viewers and the readers. The movie combines the four ingredients that make a good film: a good script, a good direction, good performances by the cast and finally, good pre-production, production and post-production work.
Now in detail: Direction: Peter Jackson directs his best movie. Definitely deserves the Oscar nomination and is one of the favorites in the category. His “orchestra director” job is noted in every scene of the film. Directing grade: 10 / 10. Cast and acting: The movie got a good cast selection and they gave good performances. Ian Mckellen and Christoper Lee (what a couple!!!!) are the highest points in the acting category. Elijah Wood got an OK grade (I think he still can act a little better) and Viggo Mortensen and the rest of the Fellowship adds some credibility to the film. The female elves “babes” (as they was described in the books), especially Liv Tyler, are the “weakest link” in the production in my opinion. Even in that case they didn’t suck. Acting grade: 9 / 10. Script: I’ve already read the books once, and after the movie I went back top the books again. For those who haven’t read the books my advice is: Wait three years and watch the movies again. They will gain points with the time. For the readers my advise is: Remember is just a movie It’s impossible to make an eight hours film!!!!!. Ok, there are some details (yes I know it wasn’t Arwen who takes Frodo to Rivendel and that there are 17 years between Bilbo’s Birthday and when Frodo leaves the Shire) and some dialogs changed from place (Gandalf conversation with Frodo about pity with Gollum, romance between Arwen and Aragorn, etc.) but I think this is a sing of talent from the writers. They made some small changes but in the end they keep the integrity of the plot (unless you are a Tolkien puritan). Script grade: 9 / 10. Production: Technically the movie is simply magnificent. The cinematography is great (The Shire was just as I imagine, Moria, The Anduin, Isengard, Rivendel, pretty much all the scenarios). The CGI effects are great and the edition is excellent too, specially in the action scenes (rated for all audiences in my country!?). Costumes, makeup, art direction…everything seems to work fine. This is possibly the best production in a while (at least tied with Titanic), and what impressed the readers most…the next two parts will be possibly better. Production grade: 10/10. Final grade: 9,5 /10. A film that certainly will enter in movie history. [This message has been edited by Zed (edited 01-02-2002).] |
